Chapter Four

My mate had been excited to get to see his cousin, since he hadn't really gotten much of a chance to see any of his family recently with his crazy schedule, and I didn't argue, because I was still a little nervous about telling him about shifters, mates… and especially chosen.

He just seemed a little like an overreactor, and I kept picturing some kind of huge crazy scene that involved people screaming and running around like they were fleeing some kind of monster. I wasn't sure who the monster was in this ridiculous daydream, him or me, but I was terrified I wasn't going to like the ending.

Alpha Becker had been kind enough to offer us a place to stay when I'd called, asking permission to come into his town. He and his mate had sounded very welcoming, especially when I told him about my own mate and our near miss at the trampoline park.

Kennedy's cousin was… not what I'd expected. I guess probably because I'd expected someone a little more like Kennedy. I mean, they were the same blood. Surely the fact that their mothers were sisters meant they would have something in common, but they didn't. At all.

It was almost like they were negatives of each other. Where Kennedy was lighter complected with chestnut hair, Boyce was blond, with darker, bronzed skin, almost the color of the peanut butter Kennedy was happily smearing all over his pancake while talking constantly, whereas Boyce looked on like he was horrified, his mouth having hardly opened in the last fifteen minutes beyond the greeting when we first arrived at Bunny's Diner.

Kennedy's hyper-energetic presence seemed almost amplified by the calm, steady presence of his cousin, whose movements were unhurried, almost like he was moving through water all the time. Boyce was also a lot bigger than Kennedy, who was maybe five six, five seven, while his cousin was closer to my six three, and considerably larger framewise as well.

"You were almost kidnapped?" Boyce raised his eyebrows at his cousin before turning to look at me, like he needed confirmation or something. "At a trampoline park?" He paused a moment. "Wait, there are kids all over those places. Why would he try to steal you when there were much easier targets?"

My mate blinked at his cousin, his face conveying his complete disbelief that the man had asked such a question. It was funny that after such a short time, I already knew what my mate was thinking, even more so than his own blood.

I knew that, as absolutely ridiculous as it was, he was deeply offended by the fact that Boyce thought anyone was a better target than him, even though it clearly made more logical sense.

"Duh," Kennedy said, pointing at his own face. "Because, I'm famous."

Boyce scoffed, and I bit my lip, clearing my throat when a chuckle tried to work its way out of me. That statement from anyone besides Kennedy, and I'd think the person was an asshole, but
