The Abbot
IT WAS THE Thracian rowing songs that got me started as a singer. Music was functional in those days. Rowing songs. Marching songs. Drinking songs. Not lifted out of daily life and refined. That isnât a criticism. Iâve spent half my life in the refined arts. In fact youâll notice three recurring enthusiasms in my life: singing, soldiering and contemplation. But soldiering gets tiring, and contemplation eventually makes me restless. Singing is limitless. And past a certain point on the History of Europe timeline, there were often a lot of opportunities for a capable singer. Paid work, even. At least room and board.
In the early years those opportunities tended to be in the Christian church. Same with contemplation. Christian monasticism was the only game in the European town for a very long time. Put the two together, and itâll be no surprise that Iâve spent quite a chunk of the past couple of thousand years in the service of the Church. So letâs deal with the Messiah in the room: Did Yeshu die and come back?
Well, if he did, I didnât see it. But then in the weeks after the crucifixion Iâd had other things on my mind. Learning to walk again, for example. How could I have known that the most influential event in western civilization may have been happening almost at my elbow? All I can safely say is that Iâve never seen an actual resurrection, before or since. But then at that point I hadnât seen anyone else like me either. So I donât rule it out.
Was Yeshu God made flesh, then? Which isnât quite the same question.
I donât have any special knowledge about that. After all my lives I still canât say whether there is a God, or a godhead, or whatever you want to call it. What I can say, though, is this: Of everyone Iâve ever met, the person who most embodied one? Yeshu the Galilean. And that may have to do.
It was odd, at first, to join what Iâd thought of as the cult of Yeshu. To espouse what they espoused. They had a certainty I could only pretend to, though over time that pretence became sincere in a way. Because I believed in Yeshu. Probably not the same way the others did. But ... duh.
