SEONG-JAE MADE IT TO THE high school closest to the Mitchells’ residence just in time to see the lights wink out through the windows; a quick Google search on his phone had told him that this was the most likely school that Jennifer Mitchell would attend, and with Stacy Mitchell’s bizarrely vocal insistence that it was normal for her daughter to have attended classes on the day of her father’s death…
Seong-Jae had a sneaking suspicion that Jennifer Mitchell had had more than homework in her backpack, when she departed.
He waited outside until the double doors out front opened, and an older, stoop-shouldered man in a custodian’s uniform stepped out and looped a chain through the door handles, before securing it with a padlock. Seong-Jae dismounted his bike and withdrew his badge, holding it up as he approached.
“Excuse me,” he called. “BPD Homicide. Detective Yoon. May I speak with you for a moment?”
The janitor stopped, turned to face him, blinked at him slowly, as if processing on a delayed reaction, before everything seemed to click. He went pale. “Uh. What’s wrong?”
“Nothing that you need concern yourself with. I am simply pursuing a lead, but you and the faculty and students of this school are safe.” He flipped his badge closed and stowed it away. “Are you the only custodian for the entire school?”
“No, but today’s my shift. We work alternating days. Rick’s tomorrow.”
Seong-Jae leaned around him, peering through the windows framing the doors. “Are those metal detectors?”
“Yeah. All the kids gotta have their backpacks scanned before they go in.”
So if Jennifer had been carrying the knife, it would not have made it inside the building. Seong-Jae frowned, folding his arms over his chest. What would he do if he were a smart seventeen-year-old girl with a murder weapon to dispose of? Simply losing it somewhere on the grounds would be out of the question. A groundskeeper could find it, or just a random student; losing it in the brush meant a very messy discovery with a hedge trimmer or lawnmower. The safest thing to do, he thought, would be to throw it away in outside garbage receptacles and trust that typical custodial duties would find the receptacles emptied and the garbage taken away before anyone could realize what it concealed.
The custodian was still staring at him, wary, questioning; Seong-Jae glanced around the front of the school grounds, then back to him. “Have you already emptied the outdoor trash receptacles today?”
“Yeah. You, um, need the garbage?”
“I need the garbage,” Seong-Jae confirmed. “Show me where it is kept.”
The custodian eyed him as if he were more worried about Seong-Jae than about the fact that Seong-Jae was investigating a murder, then muttered a skeptical, drawling, “All right, then” before turning to lead him around the side of the main school building.
Down a side alley, near the back, several dumpsters hugged the wall of the building. The custodian gestured at the middle of five. “Dumped ‘em all in that one a few hours ago. Top five or six bags.
