Chapter Nine

“What are you saying?” I asked numbly as Charlotte sank down beside me into a chair.

Beside her was another chair, but I stayed standing. Gripped in my hands was the swiftly crinkling skirt of the white wedding gown. Harry and Arturo hung in the background, as though they wanted to escape.

I didn’t blame them, I wanted to escape too.

Matthew’s eyes slowly shifted to me, going huge at the sight of me in the white dress. He held the edge of the table tightly, eyes going up and down slowly, memorizing every detail. For a moment, he even forgot his father’s cruel laugh.

Unfortunately, I was too stunned to even notice the way Matthew gazed at me. My only focus was struggling to remain on the head of the Carlton family.

“You know exactly what I’m speaking about.” Caesar Carlton snapped back, thrusting an accusatory finger at me.

“I…I don’t!” I exclaimed, turning my gaze towards Mrs. Carlton. She did not meet my eyes.

Her attention was now primarily fixed on the sheets of paper before her.

“I had someone look in to our little bride to be here.” Caesar continued, shoving a file towards Matthew.

When my fiancé didn’t lift a finger to open the paperwork, his father took the honor of spilling a dozen large print photos onto the table.

My dinner with Derek the other night exposed to everyone. Someone had been taking pictures that night? Someone had been watching us? Had Caesar really hired a PI to keep track of me? Was that something all rich people did to protect their money?

My stomach twisted uncomfortably at the thought. Had the investigator followed me home? Had they been tailing me for weeks?

“Do you want to explain who this charming fellow is?” Caesar asked, smugness playing on the corners of his thin lips. He already knew.

“My ex.” I responded quietly, “But why does this mean anything?”

“So you just went out one evening to get drunk with your ‘ex’ boyfriend.” Caesar laughed, “I’m sure it ended there.”

“It did.” I quipped back, narrowing my eyes on him, “And it wasn’t planned, we just ran into each other.”

Caesar laughed, shaking his head as he looked down at Matthew, “Son, tell me you don’t believe this dribble.”

Matthew pursed his lips, turning to look up at his father, “I do believe her.” He responded back with a firm, quiet whisper, “Annie doesn’t lie.”

“Oh, she doesn’t lie?” Caesar continued, “You think that a girl like her would give up the chance to seduce a man of your position, Matthew? I mean look at her.”

Caesar gestured rudely at me, no doubt speaking of my plain face. Even with all the makeup in the world, it was impossible to hide my dullness.

A mortified redness began crawling up my face.

I turned to look at Charlotte, but she still would not look at me.

“What’s this?” She asked softly, pushing a report towards her husband. The type on the form was too small for me to read.

“An analysis of her debt.” Caesar replied bitterly, “Look, a few weeks ago…most of it magically vanishes.
