I didn’t expect the day to pass in such a blur, but by the time we stocked up all the bathrooms, the fridge, the snack corner and the drink station, it was time to start giving out food. I expected a huge line, like it was at the homeless shelter months ago, but in the first half an hour, barely any kids made their way over, shyly thanking us for the food as they sat at the makeshift tables under the electric warmers in the tent that was set up and ate the warm food. My heart clenched watching how young they were and to see the desperation and brokenness in their eyes. I had to swallow a lump in my throat to be able to keep going.

By the time the first hour passed, we had given out at least a hundred meals, filling the tent with teens who were content to have a safe place to sit down and eat their warm meal. They opened the packages as if it were Christmas morning, happy to get anything, even if it was just basic items that they needed to survive.

“For everyone to know, we have filled the donation boxes located in the communal area with books and clothes, so make sure you check it out,” Axel announced to the crowd at some point, prompting some of them to sprint off.

My stomach shrank to a little ball as I remembered how many unused jackets and coats I had and that I could have easily brought with me and leave here. Most of these teens didn’t even have proper winter clothes.

“Are you okay?” Matt nudged me with his shoulder, electricity running through my body from our contact. “You look sad…”

“I am,” I nodded, as I poured some mashed potato on the plate in front of me. “This is all so heartbreaking.”

“Yeah, it is,” he agreed, his jaw set. “Some people are just not meant to be parents.”

“Totally,” I agreed with a scoff. For the first time in my life, I wasn’t talking about us but about these teens going through God knew what just because their parents failed them.

Matt reached out his hand, and it landed on my back. Through my thick coat, I could still feel his touch, the way his fingers gripped the fur of my coat and how they moved in a slow circular movement trying to calm me down.

Taking several deep breaths, I allowed warmth to spread through my body from his presence. It was impossible to fight it. My body still had feelings for him, no matter what my heart tried to tell me.

Part of me would forever belong to him.

As I grew more accustomed to his touch, he pulled away, leaving me cold and shivering as the next person approached.

Blinking up, I tried not to look at the faces of the kids, but sometimes I couldn’t help myself. My eyes collided with Andy’s blue ones, and I almost stumbled back. Surprised flashed across her face, before she pushed the plate in front of me, averting her gaze.
