Chapter 33

July

AH DON’T OVERTHINK it. Just do what comes naturally.

Mia was conscious of the presence in the bed beside her. And even in semi-sleep, she knew it wasn’t Daniel.

Slowly forcing herself into consciousness, she managed to crack open her eyes again and found herself looking up at a detailed ceiling rose and a cheap chrome bar of spotlights. She lay there, feeling dazed, as the questions, one at a time, popped into her head.

Glancing down along the bed, Mia realised that the thin duvet was only covering her naked body from her belly-button down. She grabbed it and pulled it up to her neck.

Something tells me we’re past self-consciousness.

She turned her head and saw the white blotchy back of a naked man. His hair was shoulder-length at the back, like he was trying to compensate for the growing bald patch. The shoulders definitely weren’t as broad as Daniel's and, when she lifted the covers, she was looking at significantly flabbier buttocks.

Pulling the duvet back up to her chin, she slowly sat up and allowed her gaze to wander around the room, willing herself to recognise something, anything. But nothing was familiar, not the dull grey-white featureless walls, not the cheap MDF table with oversized flat-screen TV. The picture on the night-stand, of a girl, early-twenties probably, with black hair and intense eyes, certainly did not ring any bells.

“Can you tell me where the hell I am?” she asked the girl.

Her croaky voice, the first sound she had heard, caused the man to stir. As he rolled on to his back, she could see his face. And last night’s activities came back to her with cruel clarity.

His attempt to flirt with the shy Suzanne. A consolatory shared cigarette with Mia outside the restaurant and then another. A messy kiss in the back of a taxi that had continued against a front door, up the stairs and into this room.

She could remember his taste, that all-too-familiar nicotine-and-whiskey combination from her youth. His attention had moved to her ears, neck and breasts as they fumbled with clothes. She could remember her hands on him, all over him and how, for an older man, he became excited so quickly, at just her touch in the right place.

Mia closed her eyes again and hoped, prayed, that that had been it. One premature male orgasm followed by immediate coma. But she knew they had gone further. She knew he had been inside her. And that she had wanted it, welcomed it, enjoyed every second of it.

The low intermittent buzzing broke the silence and Mia turned towards it. Her bag lay open on the floor, its contents spilling out on to floor. She reached down and retrieved the phone, forcing away the accompanying nausea.

Please don’t be Daniel, she pleaded to fate before looking at the screen. She didn’t have the wherewithal to come up with a convincing lie right now. And she certainly wasn’t about to tell him the truth.

Mia sighed with relief when she looked at the screen.
