Gianna and I went back to Castello Ruffo today, probably for the last time. Of all the places we meet, Castello Ruffo is our favorite. We gazed into the brilliant blue sea right out past the Straits of Messina. I wanted to take Gianna and sail out onto that water straight to Sicily and never come back.

The wind swirled around us as we stood at the edge of the castle, picking up our hair and the edges of our clothes. The waves below us crashed and fell against each other, its currents so strong. It was dangerously beautiful and captured the torment in my heart. Standing against the stone wall with Gianna in front, her back against me, my hands resting on her thickening waist, I just wanted to remain there and shield us from the passing of time and things to come. I was confused and bewildered, feeling peace one moment and craze the next.

The rhythmic dance of the white-tipped waves pulled at me, lulling me, testing me. We were so close to those waters. Just a slight tip forward and it would swallow us at once. And we would be together. Gone, but together. Gianna woke me from my trance when she called my name. “Franco,” she said over the waves, “this is our spot.” She waved her hand at the blue expanse. “This place. It represents our love. And how we found each other.”

She’s right. This is where we are most at peace together. I wiped a tear from my eye before she could see it when she turned around. Guilty for what I’d been thinking. Sorrow filled my heart. We stayed there for a few hours just watching, reminiscing, talking, dreaming. Planning and hopeful for a promising future that I could only dream about but could never really happen. We went to dinner at Rocco’s and came back to watch the sunset, not caring about who might see us or how long we were gone.

And then, no matter how hard we tried to put it off, the most dreadful moment had come to say goodbye. We sat quietly on a bench near the water. I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small jewelry box I’d been holding onto all day. I gave the box to Gianna and told her to open it. When she did, her eyes filled with tears as a combination of joy and heartbreak spread across them. She lifted the delicate gold necklace I had specially made for her. At the center of the chain is ‘F & G’ with a small heart next to the G. I flipped the necklace over so she could see the faint inscription: “my one true love.” I told her the heart represents our baby.

“No matter what happens and no matter where we are,” I said, “this represents our love and our bond forever.” She cried as I put it on her. It looked beautiful resting against her golden skin.

We held hands walking home, and when it was time to let go, we embraced hard and kissed passionately one last time.
