Testosterone merged with the haze of smoke, male sounds, male place, an arena of pleasures carved out of a muscle of rock.

It was a good crowd for the fight, the stadium was packed. Murphy sat in the front row next to Rhonda and watched as Gary and Hank got in the ring. They took each other’s measure and waited for the bell. Hank gave Gary his hard cold stare, Gary looked back, his eyes empty now of everything except the desire to win, to spatter the crowd with sweat. Murphy lit a cigar and blew smoke towards the ceiling. He didn’t see Rhonda’s face as she stared at Hank. Then the bell rang.

Hank went in and jabbed, Gary ducked and bobbed. Hank had a hard punch and landed a couple before Gary caught him with a right hook and knocked him out in the first round. The ref counted it out. Rhonda got up from her seat and went into the changing room to wait for Gary, finding Katy Peach in there.

Katy was dressed in a tiny pink mini skirt and a blouse so thin it was all on show. The two women glared at one another.

Rhonda was in her jeans and a peasant blouse. She walked up to her and Katy stared her down, as Gary came into the changing room.

‘What do you think you’re doing in here?’ Rhonda said to Katy.

‘Waiting for Gary, what does it look like?’

‘Waiting to give him something? Is that what you’re doing?’

‘Now what would I be about to give him?’

‘No fights in here,’ Gary said.

Rhonda turned. ‘Tell her to get out,’ she said.

‘Katy, you better go.’

‘I’ll see you at my flat, good fight.’

‘He won’t be seeing you at your flat.’

They went back and celebrated. Rhonda bought a bottle of champagne, Tesco’s brand, and she and Gary drank it and ate some pasta and salad. Gary was tired and fell asleep on the couch and Rhonda got dressed and went to Katy’s flat. Katy opened the door and looked at Rhonda standing there with the hard stare.

‘What do you want?’ she said.

‘To talk to you.’

Katy stepped aside and Rhonda followed her into the kitchen. She looked around and took in the furniture and the bottle of wine on the table.

‘You want to talk to me about Gary. He comes here, Rhonda,’ Katy said.

‘You’ve been chasing him and I want it to stop.’

‘What if he doesn’t want that?’

‘I’m telling you to stop now.’

‘Gary’s been fucking me for weeks’

‘What did you say, you bitch?’

Rhonda flew at her. They grabbed each other’s hair. Rhonda slapped Katy’s face, leaving a bright red mark. Katy punched Rhonda and knocked her backwards and then Rhonda hit her in the jaw. Katy got her fists in Rhonda’s blouse, tearing it and Rhonda grabbed Katy’s skirt and pulled. Katy scratched Rhonda’s face. Then Rhonda hit her hard, and Katy fell onto the table. Rhonda hit her again.

Then she left the flat went and back to Gary. He was in the living room drinking beer and Rhonda went and poured herself a cold one as he looked at her torn blouse.
