CHAPTER 39

KNOCK

The feel of Quake's breath on my face woke me up in the worst way. Pushing at his boxy head, I sat up and began to rub his ears with both hands. That always made the big lug stop pushing into me. He loved it.

But a soft laugh proved we weren't alone. I looked up to see Tiffany in complete disarray. Her hair was a tragic mess. Her clothes were all crumpled and creased. She also looked really confused and very lost.

"You're at my place," I explained. "Someone put something in your drink last night, we couldn't leave you there, and your friends said you couldn't go home."

"Oh." She nodded, still not looking like that had clicked. "Bathroom?"

I pointed across the room towards the door. "Right there. There's even an orange toothbrush on the counter that's brand new. My sister thought you might want it."

"Cool. Thanks." She began walking that way, but paused halfway across the room. "Do your parents know I'm here?"

"No parents," I told her. "I live with three people I'm not really related to but call family. You're fine, Tiff."

"Yeah. Cool."

She was in the bathroom for a while. I took the chance to sneak into my room and get a change of clothes, and when Tiffany came out, she looked a few thousand times better. Her hair was smooth and brushed. Her clothes had been straightened, even if they were still wrinkled. She'd also washed her face, so the last traces of makeup were gone, making it clear she was still absolutely gorgeous without it.

I was in the process of folding up the blankets I'd used, so I gestured for her to take the couch. That earned me a weak smile, but she did, perching nervously at the edge. I finished the blanket, then claimed my computer chair, swiveling it around so I was facing her.

"Ok," I said. "Let's start at the beginning. What do you remember?"

"I was at Dylan's party," she said. "Jericho and I were going to cause a distraction, but I don't remember that happening." Then she paused. "No, wait. I kinda remember being in a car."

"Cade's," I explained. "He drove you over here."

Then her brow creased. "Oh."

Yeah, I wasn't sure what that meant, but decided to fill her in on the rest. "So, we think Dylan might be selling ketamine. My sister's pretty sure that's what you were drugged with, and it's a medicine that vets use, so he'd be the one to get it. We think when we showed up - Jeri, Cade, Ripper, and me - it made him nervous, so he found a way to get us all out."

"By drugging me and Jeri?" she asked.

I nodded. "We're pretty sure that's what lifting up the girls' shirts was about. It distracted us while Wade drugged your drinks. I mean, since he was the one beside them."

"So he decided to do this as soon as you showed up?" she asked.

"We're guessing," I told her. "The problem is verifying it, but here's one thing for you.
