Lilac

Something was wrong. The last two weeks had been no picnic, from the second I’d been kidnapped and woke up in a shitty cell to April trying to get under my skin my hurting August daily. This was different...there was a palpable energy in the house, the tension in the air thrumming with electricity as rooms were aired out and cleaned. Was Father expecting guests? Was it time for the germination or whatever the fuck they called it?

Being here was messing with my head more as each day passed. On one hand, I was here against my will, plucked from my life and put in a vase of some stranger’s home. They were going to breed me. Breed me. Every time I think about it, a wave of sickness hits me. Even outside the foster system, I was still nothing more than a body, a combination of parts that rarely functioned as a whole. On the other hand, I was healthy, well-fed, and for want of a better word...cared for. August doted on me, following me everywhere, finding any excuse just to brush against me and the way he looked at me could set the world on fire with its intensity. Was this how they did it? Did they want us to feel secure before they tortured and killed us? Did they get off on fucking with us psychologically as well as using us as baby carriers? It hurt my head dwelling on it for too long, especially since I couldn’t do anything about it. At least, not yet. I had a feeling that the answers I needed were in The Greenhouse and The Nursery since those were the two areas August tried to steer me away from the most.

I was trying to formulate a plan to get myself in there when April comes into the dining room and tells us it’s time for a shower. We showered daily, so this wasn’t strange but it was usually after the exercise sessions and not after breakfast. The grin she flashes me sets my teeth on edge and the predatory look on her face tells me that whatever is happening is not going to be pleasant for us. April, I’d come to learn, thrived off pain. She wanted Rose to fight against her. Wanted August to covet me. That way she had a reason to punish them, she was like my foster father in that respect.

Lars, Jason and August escort us to the wet room that I’d kind of grown used to by now. We strip and leave our clothes in a pile to be washed. Handing us our usual soaps, and lotions, April also hands us a razor.

“Shave everything. And if you don’t, I will,” Her glare is directed at Rose, who barely even looks up anymore. Since they’d cut out her tongue, she’d sunk further into herself, her defiant streak wiped clean away as if it had been written in sand. “And I don’t have the steadiest hands.”

Leaning against the back wall, April looks almost bored as she scrolls through her phone.
