Chapter Eleven

When Jonathan arrived at Andrew’s flat for dinner on Saturday night, he couldn’t believe the change since his last visit a couple of days earlier. He had been wary of even eating there considering how dirty some parts of it looked before, but Andrew had obviously made an effort. A huge effort. The papers that had previously littered the floor were gone, and the carpet had not just been hoovered but cleaned. The kitchen looked so different without the washing up piled on the worktops. Even more surprising was that the computer was now standing on a desk, which looked as if it had been put together just a few hours earlier (as it, indeed, had). The old-style television had gone, replaced by a new slim, widescreen effort which seemed just a little too big for the room in which it was housed. A small music system had also appeared and was sitting on a small chest of drawers that was also new. The androgynous voice of Chet Baker emerged from the speakers.

“You like what I’ve done with the place?” Andrew asked as he cooked their stir-fry.

“It’s one hell of a transformation in two days! Have you had Changing Rooms in?”

“Sadly not.”

“It looks like you’ve spent a fortune.”

“I don’t normally spend much and so the money was sitting in the bank – despite what they say, teacher’s pay can be very nice if you don’t have a huge family to look after. I saw the look on your face when you first came in here the other day, and it was a bit of a wake-up call. I realised that something had to be done if I was going to start having ‘gentleman callers’.”

“Well, it goes without saying it looks much better. It looks nice.”

“Thanks. It took bloody hours to do.”

“I can imagine.” Jonathan walked into the kitchen area and leaned against the now grime-free worktop watching Andrew cook. “Smells good,” he said.

“Thanks. It will probably taste foul.”

“I’m sure it won’t.”

“It’s the first thing that’s been cooked in this kitchen in months – except for the ready meals in the microwave – which has also been cleaned, I might add.”

“I appreciate the effort. How’s things at the school?”

“Oh, you know. Much the same. The kid who was bullying the boy that I was telling you about has been off for a couple of days. I haven’t heard any of the teachers complaining about his truancy, I might add. Apparently he beat up his friend during the week and he landed up in A&E.”

Jonathan raised his eyebrows.

“Nice. Remind me never to be his friend.”

“I will. Although I’d disown you if you even tried! Hey, I need to dish this up. The one thing I haven’t bought is a table. Not enough room really in this little flat. We’re stuck with eating it on our laps, if that’s OK.”

“Sure, I don’t mind. I’ll open the wine, yeah?”

“Sounds good to me.”

Andrew added the final touches to the meal while Jonathan opened the wine and poured two glasses.
