TRISTAN

I couldn’t believe how easy my plan had been to set into motion. It couldn’t have gone any smoother with Ty if I had scripted our conversation myself. “One down, one to go,” I said aloud as I tossed my orange Nerf basketball into the hoop hanging on the back of my bedroom door. It swooshed through the net––as I had known it would.

Ty had been the easy one to convince, though. He was already madly in love with Lexi. It would take some finesse to sway Lexi into agreeing to my plan. I would need to handle this delicately to keep from decimating her feelings, but I needed to move quickly before things spiraled out of control.

There was no way Lexi would get an abortion, and I feared that she wouldn’t be able to give up the baby for adoption when the time came. I wasn’t ready to marry her and raise the child, but Ty was. Having him step in would keep the baby in our family, which would allow me to watch the little tyke grow up. It would also give my parents the opportunity to get to know their grandchild. It really was the best-case scenario for everyone involved.

I ticked off my talking points on my fingers as I prepared to face Lexi. My plan was to go there for a visit in person. This conversation was too important for a phone or video call. I might be a little dense when it comes to emotions, but even I sensed this was bound to be one of the most important discussions of our lives.

When Saturday finally rolled around, I got up early to make the two-hour drive inland to the middle of Michigan, where Lexi’s family lived. I wanted to have plenty of time to chat with her and still make it back in time to prepare for tonight’s game.

Lexi’s eyes lit up with excitement when her parents called her downstairs from her room. I knew she assumed that I was here to help her share the news of the pregnancy with her parents and offer to marry her.

Even though we were well into the twenty-first century, Lexi and her family believed in old-school values. I had little doubt that her parents would be in agreement that I should marry Lexi and raise the baby with her. They would get their wish––almost. We would simply substitute in my identical twin brother as the husband and father, and everyone would be happy.

Lexi and I were ushered to the formal sitting room and offered a tray of iced tea and sugar cookies. Once we were finally alone, Lexi gushed, “I’m so glad you’re here.”

Not wanting her to take control of the conversation, I jumped in with my planned speech. When I got to the part about me not being mature enough to handle having a family, but Ty being ready, Lexi’s head whipped back as if I had slapped her.

“I know you’re not suggesting what I think you mean by that.
