Maybe she could jump. That rock wasn’t that far down. It was a pretty large outcropping and seemed to have plenty of room for two of them. But what would happen if she did jump? How would she get both of them back up to the top of the rise? What if she jumped and missed? Worse, what if she did jump, got trapped on the boulder and Chance was already dead?

All these thoughts swirled through her mind and sent waves of panic from her head to her toes. But then she realized that none of it mattered. She had to get down there to see if she could help Chance. If he was already dead or if she misjudged the jump were things she couldn’t control and wouldn’t know until she tried. She sat for a moment contemplating the safest way to do what she knew she had to do and then put their lives in God’s hands.

When she was sure of her strategy—or as sure as she could be under the circumstances—she stood up and moved to the edge of the cliff. If she stayed close to the side of the mountain and just stepped into space, she should make it. The outcropping was about twenty feet below where she stood now. She could do this. She would do this—for Chance.

She closed her eyes and lifted her foot.

It was the sound of the plane returning that made her freeze in space and open her eyes. It had circled around and was coming back low, fast and heading right for her.

Amanda turned and ran. She ran faster than she believed she could and headed toward the cover of the evergreens. She had almost reached the woods when she heard loud popping noises. What was that?

The ground around her kicked up in a dozen different places, and holes appeared in the snow. Someone was shooting at her! She didn’t think she could but adrenaline kicked in and she moved faster—a dozen yards to safety, five yards, five feet.

Suddenly, it felt like someone had punched her in the back with a force that knocked her off her feet. She refused to stop. She scrambled through the snow, clearing the last few feet and hiding in the evergreens knowing the plane couldn’t follow, couldn’t see her.

She leaned back against a tree trunk and tried to catch her breath. She could hear the sound of the plane’s engine fading. He was gone—at least, for now. Why was someone trying to kill her? Who was trying to kill her? A searing heat twisted at her gut and made her double over in pain. After a moment, she inhaled deeply and straightened back up. Almost in slow motion, she lifted her hand from her stomach and stared. Blood. She’d been shot.
