Chapter 14

Once his plane landed in Los Angeles, Philippe knew that the first place to check for Gianna was Chic, Mais Oui! He remembered she had said it was off of the famous Rodeo Drive, so he had the taxi driver drop him off near the midpoint of the road, and he carried his luggage with him like a vagabond. Since the trip was supposed to be a short one, he had only brought his carry-on.

He walked down the street and recognized one that sounded familiar, the address of Chic, Mais Oui! so he turned down it. It was blazing hot outside and he desperately wanted a glass of water, but he suppressed the need in order to continue his hunt. Fortunately, the street he was on was more shaded than Rodeo Drive. He felt like a leprechaun who had found his pot of gold when he saw the sign for Chic, Mais Oui! The windows had signs announcing that the restaurant was “coming soon.” They also showed the address of the boutique eatery’s website.

The place looked incredible even though it was still a work in progress. You’ve done well, Gianna. He caught his breath, and trying to clean himself up, he wiped the sweat off his face and tussled his curly hair. He gave his head a quick shake. It is what it is. He had plane hair, and he probably smelled, but there was nothing to do about it now.

Of course Philippe was upset that Giana had just disappeared, but she probably thought he had stood her up. All Philippe knew was that he desperately wanted to clear things up with his beautiful American friend.

Here goes nothing. He quietly knocked on the door, not wanting to startle her too much. He waited a minute but didn’t hear anything at all. He knocked again with a little more force.

He heard footsteps on the other side of the wall, then a woman called, “Who is it?”

The adorable voice made Philippe grin from ear to ear. She was there. He would recognize Gianna’s voice anywhere. “Gianna! It’s Philippe. Philippe Deneuve.”

He heard the lock twist, and she opened the door. Philippe was greeted with a look of pure shock. Gianna looked as if she was seeing a ghost.

“Hi,” he said.

She was speechless at first. “What are you doing here?”

“I had to see you. I had to find you. I’m so sorry about everything.”

Gianna held her finger up to her mouth, as if to say “Be quiet,” and held the door open so that he could come in. “I’m doing a closed tasting from the list of resumes I gathered. I still need to find a chef.”

There was an awkward silence between them after those last words rolled off her tongue. Still, Philippe thought his surprise visit was off to a good start so far. Maybe there was hope. Maybe, just maybe, this whole mess could be salvaged.

Once inside the restaurant, his eyes wandered everywhere. The restaurant was immaculate. Most of the construction had been completed, and Chic, Mais Oui! was absolutely stunning.
