Chapter 42

When Jordan came out of the interview, Kath was waiting to speak to him. She had found footage of the two men being picked up and driven away from the burning car.

“Great stuff,” said Jordan. “Okay, I need whatever can be isolated of them on foot. Get on to the geeks in technical forensics and ask them to put a rush on it. Tell them the paperwork is on the way. I need to speak to Pat Roach. Do we know if she’s still in Blackpool?”

“No, they saw her on the train to Liverpool and there have been lights on at her house, according to the patrol. So, I guess she’s back at home now.”

“And the son?”

“He wasn’t with her. His car is still in the pound, he never came to collect it.”

“That’s odd. We’re on our way to the Roach place. Going to have a word.”

* * *

Pat Roach was wrapped in a towelling dressing gown, though it was in the middle of the afternoon. She rolled her eyes and groaned but pulled open the door and stepped back to allow access for Jordan and Stella.

“What the hell are you after now?” she said. “You already asked us everything. You had nothing. This is harassment. I’ll make a complaint.”

They’d heard the same or similar so many times before. “Put the kettle on, should I?” Stella said.

“No, you bloody shouldn’t. I’m paying my taxes for you to have canteens at your offices, I’m not giving you tea as well.”

“Okay then, we’ll keep it short,” Jordan said.

“Good. Then you can bog off and leave me in peace.”

“It’s a quick question about Julie.”

“Go on then.”

“While you were with her, were you aware of any interest she had in the paranormal, or anything like that?”

“The paranormal. What the hell are you talking about?”

“You know, spiritualism, magic, crystals.”

“No. Is that all?” Pat moved towards the door.

“Don’t you want to think about that for a minute?”

“You asked me, I’ve told you. Now, if there’s nothing else.”

“Where’s Paul?” Stella asked.

“No idea. I left him in Blackpool. He wasn’t coming back here. He said he’d had it with the Pool, nothing but trouble, he said.”

“So, you’re not in touch with him?”

“I said.”

“Did you know that Julie had made a will?”

“A will?”

They waited in silence. Pat pulled at the belt on her dressing gown. She tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear, and scratched at her neck. “Not sure. I mean that’s personal, that sort of stuff.”

“So, she never discussed a will with you?” Jordan said.

“Can’t remember anything about that.”

“You never witnessed one for her?”

“Why are you asking about that sort of thing? She’s not even buried yet, why would that matter?”

“Just working on finding out what was going on with her. Any background we can get might help us to find out who did this horrible thing,” he said.

“Well, I might have done but it was way back. Not long after we were friends. I mean, she had some papers and said she needed a signature and would I do it.
