Chapter 11
The air in the Otherworld was thick with an energy that made my skin tingle. Not in a bad way. It wasnât electric, but magical. More like Biofreeze than a finger in the light socket. Pleasant and soothing. As a witch, I was accustomed to such things. As a vampire, even more so. Anything a mortal might feelâespecially one with an inclination toward spell craftâwas amplified in my senses.
The looks on Sebastianâs and Donnieâs faces though suggested they felt it, too. And to them, this was a fresh experience. Donnie was almost giddy about itâlike a child tasting ice cream for the first time. Sebastian, as was his nature, was more cautious. Optimistic and open-minded, but careful at the same time.
There was no sun here. Nothing celestial shining down on us from outer space. Instead, the entire sky was aglow, like this place was its own light source. I relished in the warmth that washed over my skin. As a vampire, it had been a while since Iâd enjoyed anything that resembled such a pleasurable sensation.
Annabelle stood at the center of a clearing, her eyes closed, her arms outstretched. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. Like, really? Were all the theatrics really necessary?
âBeli,â she whispered. Whenever she summoned the dagger on earth, she shouted his name. This time, though, her invocation was more like a prayer.
A roar in the skies above signaled the dragonâs arrival. Where had he come from? A portal of some kind? I didnât know. All I understood was that the majestic beast, its scales both golden and green, encircled us as it spiraled toward the ground.
If I didnât know better, Iâd think he was a predator descending upon his prey. If it was Oblivion, maybe. But this was Beli. He was good. An agent of creation, not a monster of the void.
âWelcome, Beli,â Annabelle said as the dragon landed on the ground without so much as a thump. The beast was large and graceful. Like a sumo wrestler with years of training in the ballet.
âAnnabelle,â Beliâs voice rumbled through the clearing, deep and resonant, vibrating in our bones. âYou have summoned me in full form. What do you seek?â
âGuidance and transport,â Annabelle responded, her voice confident and direct. Wasnât the first time sheâd talked to the dragon like this. âWe need to find Baron Samedi.â
âClimb aboard, everyone,â Annabelle instructed, gesturing for us to mount the dragonâs back. âMercy, you ride up front. Place your hands on Beliâs head so he can sense your connection to Baron Samedi.â
âBasically using me like a GPS?â I tilted my head.
âPrecisely,â Beli responded, his voice rumbling through the air with an amused tone.
âWait, did the dragon just talk?â Sebastian muttered, eyes wide as saucers.
Donnie looked equally flabbergasted, his mouth hanging open. âAnd how does he know what a GPS is?â
âYes, humans, I do speak,â Beli said, his voice laced with a hint of amusement. âWhy would you be so arrogant as to think speech originates with your kind?
