The offices of Thurgood and Thurgood were ensconced in a pedestrianised part of the city not all that far from Laughland’s flat. He had therefore taken the liberty of having a more leisurely breakfast than usual before walking around two corners to what was effectively the legal centre of the city. At reception, he had been told that Mr Bryant was with a client. Did he want to wait? Yes, he did. It would be about forty minutes. That was fine. He followed the bouquet of expensive perfume emanating from the body of the elegant, mature woman whose smile, professionally warm but highly controlled, had greeted him as he’d arrived. A dark corridor led to the waiting area, a meticulously maintained and decorated Georgian chamber that reminded him of Halston-Gore’s consultation room.

He took one of the easy chairs in a corner and pulled out his mobile. He checked again the email he’d received from Hargreaves earlier that morning:
