Chapter Eighteen
Our rental car was a four-door, late model sedan, the chassis teal and the roof beige since the agency had nothing in champagne which Jacquie had said was such a popular color. The evening before, she'd selected the rental car from the lot's rows of parked vehicles. The four banger engine didn't inspire me with confidence. A herd of stallions cantering under the hood did. The aim, to my way of figuring it, was to haul ass, and the four bangers just didn't haul ass. I pointed out the fact to her.
Reacting with disdain, she waved off my protests, and new rage thundered through my chest. I wavered an eye blink away from leaving the heist when she plucked out a crisp, spinach green Benjamin Franklin from the wallet in her purse. Sneering, she waved the Benjamin a short inch under my flaring nostrils. Intoxicated by the money, I groaned. Again, even if I was left feeling debased and used, I caved to her will.
"There, there," said Jacquie, stuffing the Benjamin into her purse. "Feeling calmer now, baby cakes?"
"I hate you. Doing that cheap stunt was unfair."
"The sales guy is tapping his toe for us to sign the rental car's contract."
We filed into the dim office and closed the deal. The mousy sales guy never got a clear visible on either of us. She drove my Camry back while I tagged after her in the rental car. The red light I saw flickering on the dashboard caused me some alarm since I guessed it couldn't be a good thing. After the red light went off, I decided it was a false alarm. She'd insisted this car was "the ticket" because nobody "would suspect a thing" since the four-cylinder hoopties, like this one, were "driven everywhere in St. Agnes City." We parked my Camry to store in a nearby shopping center parking lot where I'd go pick it up later, and I'd say my Camry was in the garage for repairs if I was asked while we did the diamond heist.
