CHAPTER 10

I was almost late for the Vampire Conclave.

The Conclave, again, wasn’t until six at night, but I’d been run off my feet all day. Too many problems to handle, too many balls in the air. Too many people to worry about. It felt like it was never ending.

Cindy’s wing was mostly healed, but she was out of action. She couldn’t fly at all. The elf medimage put a weird brace on her back to prevent her from moving her wings. He ordered her to leave the brace on for at least three days.

She was depressed; even more than usual. Cindy couldn’t go far at all on her own little feet, so she was stuck in my apartment, moping around. She didn’t even have to bother with her usual goth makeup—her skin was already pale, the dark circles under her eyes were natural, and her sullen frown seemed like it was concreted in place.

I was worried about her. Her sponsor told me she was very vulnerable right now, and more prone to relapse than ever before. So, I put on my huge hoop earrings and forced her to come everywhere with me so I could monitor her.

She wasn’t allowed inside the Conclave, though. I dithered over it for a while, wondering if it was worth breaking the rules just to make sure she was safe. In the end, I left her with Sandy and Sinclair. Sinclair promised to look after her, but when I left the apartment, Gor’gamuth and Cindy were having a stare-off.

Dennis, the vampire nestmaster, didn’t leave me alone all day either. He’d worked himself into a state of near panic trying to organize the Vampire Conclave. Amelia hadn’t given him any instructions at all. I’d already shot down the idea of holding the Conclave on her party bus, so she offloaded the whole thing onto Dennis, and went sightseeing with Tanner.

Tanner asked me to join them. I declined. I didn’t tell Max that he asked me.

Max himself was busy entertaining King Tafari, who also wanted to see the sights of Washington DC. I missed Max like crazy. I had stayed with my mom too late the night before; Salozar’s words about keeping her safe had unsettled me. By the time I snuck back into Max’s apartment, he’d already gotten up and left.

To make my day worse, Sergeant Richard Goodrim called in the late afternoon with another winterbite incident for me to take care of. He reported a curly-haired fairy woman with huge silver wings throwing handfuls of glitter and shouting strange alien-sounding curses at a crowd outside the city zoo. There were reports of several injuries, so I rushed over.

I was unimpressed when I found a very drunk redheaded woman dressed up like a fairy, throwing handfuls of glitter at passers-by, slurring swear words in a heavy Scottish accent at anyone who looked at her funny.

She was clearly human. I only intervened when she got into a fistfight with a Swedish tourist.

I rushed back to the Vampire Conclave in a cab, changing clothes on the way.
