Chapter Twenty

Everyone had been so happy to have me back and yet I couldn’t be the same person as I was before, I felt… Tainted. I thirsted to keep going beyond the walls, I’d joined up with one of the teams that often went out, much to the displeasure of my adoptive family.

I’d gone out with Ax and his group a few times in the last month, Ax was the tattooed hot guy who had been with William and the others when they found me. He was a good guy, lethal with an axe… How ironic…

Tanner and I were having a few issues when it came to my friendship with Ax, he was pissed I was hanging around another man so much that wasn’t part of our original group.

We argued all the time and Hannah was always caught up in the middle of us, our relationship was changing, and I didn’t want to hurt her, but I didn’t think it was going to work for much longer.

I could see them both now, she’s sitting on his lap, giggling happily at something he said, they are happy together when I’m not around. I miss Tanner as my friend, I still love them both, but I’m not sure I’m IN love anymore. The apocalypse really screwed everything up and yet brought me newer and better things too.

My fingers keep fiddling with my lighter, staring at the flame, taking a moment to myself.

“You have a serious problem with fire,” Ax chuckles, sitting beside me.

“I like to look at the flames, they’re so pretty and yet so fucking destructive if you let them loose,” I murmur, flicking it up again.

“Sounds like you,” he smirks as I look up at him, even sitting beside me he towers over me, the guy is a giant.

“Destructive, yeah, pretty, no,” I snort.

“No, you’re not pretty,” he says, pausing and I don’t know whether I should be upset that he just agreed with me or not. Sometimes it was nice to know you were pretty, especially when you felt like shit. “Hey, I wasn’t finished,” he says, pulling me to face him again.

“What?” I ask with a sigh.

“You’re not pretty, you’re beautiful,” he says.

“Now I know you’re full of shit,” I laugh.

“You obviously haven’t been told enough; don’t your lovers tell you that you’re gorgeous?” He raises a brow, looking over at Tanner and Hannah still curled around each other.

“We don’t really do anything but argue lately, I stay away so Hannah’s not in the middle,” I sigh.

“Sounds a little toxic to me,” Ax states.

“It’s complicated,” I reply.

“Maximilian!” Brandon calls out sternly from the house, gaining the attention of Tanner and Hannah, Tanner glares at Ax.

“Maximilian?” I laugh at Ax.

“I hate it, I changed it, but SOME people like to piss me off. He’s a real piece of work,” Ax grumbles.

“I can agree with that, he wasn’t always so bad, the apocalypse seemed to knock something bad into him,” I replied, spotting Brandon watching us closely. He’d drifted away from most of us, Bob too.
