BUCK

Snickering, I drop my arm over James’s shoulder and pull her close. “See you tomorrow, Bonnie.”

“Enjoy your evening,” she calls, leading the horses into the barn as I guide James back down the hill toward my place.

I don’t point out the slight limp in her walk or tell her that we both reek of sex. This afternoon has been perfect. The ride was nice, the view beautiful and the sex was spectacular. I already thought James was everything I wanted in a woman; then she let me strip her naked and fuck her with the mountains as the backdrop while she screamed loud enough to cause an avalanche.

I’m in my thirties, I’ve had a decent amount of sex. Some of it okay, some good, some fucking great. But nothing, nothing compares to how it is with James. She’s somehow both sweet and filthy at the same time and I fucking love it. I can’t get enough of her.

Nero calls out a greeting the moment I open the front door. Last night was a complete clusterfuck, so even though it’s obvious James wants to escape upstairs, I drag her into the kitchen first.

“Hey,” I say, positioning her in front of me and curling my arms around her waist from behind.

“Hey, you guys had a good day?” he asks.

“Really good. We took some of Hal’s horses and rode up to where there’s a really pretty view.”

“Nice.” He nods with a smile. “Did you have a good time, James?”

I tense, unsure if she’s going to be the James she is with me or the ice queen persona she fell into last night.

“Really good, thanks. I’m ready to have a soak though. I forgot how much it hurts your legs.”

Her tone is soft and sweet, and I exhale a relieved breath.

Nero chuckles. “Yeah, Bonnie convinced me to help out one day when they were short-handed. I looked like John Wayne for a week after. Do you have any plans for the night?”

“Nothing firm. Why?” I ask.

“I have brisket cooking in the smoker and some of Dirk’s wife’s homemade wine if you fancy joining me.”

“Oh brisket,” James coos before I have a chance to speak.

“I’ll take that as a yes then?” Nero asks.

“Yes.” She nods. “One of my neighbors, when I was growing up, used to have a barbeque place. Less restaurant and more food truck, but in a building if that makes sense. He cut the side out of an old trailer, then parked it at the front of a rundown garage with a barbeque pit in it. He cooked all the meat out back, then sold the food in paper trays out the side of the trailer. Our neighborhood smelled like brisket and ribs pretty much all the time. I actually haven’t had it since I left for college.”

My mouth falls open as I stare down at the back of her head. That’s the most she’s said about where she grew up since we met, and she’s telling my brother, not me. Jealousy
