Chapter Sixteen

Lena

“I had to pry the damn elevator doors open at the bottom,” Gavin was saying as he replayed the story to the others. “But I guess the shifter decided not to try and jump down the elevator shaft after us, much to my relief.”

The assembled crowd chuckled. Well, all of them except for Lena, that was. She was too busy bent over her backup laptop, searching endless reams of data, trying to find mention of their brother.

So far she wasn’t having much luck.

“Anything?” Kassian asked.

“Does it fucking look like I’ve found anything?” she shot back. “Quit asking every five minutes. If I find something, I’ll let everyone else know. Then they can decide whether they’re going to let you know. Got it?”

Kassian growled angrily, but he didn’t pursue it any further.

Which was just fine with Lena, because she needed to maintain her concentration. She’d promised Gavin that she was going to find his brother. But the longer she searched, the more unlikely it seemed that she was going to be able to keep her word. She was starting to panic, though she clamped down on it, doing her best not to let anyone know.

The others had been much better than Kassian, only asking her every now and then how it was going. She knew they were frustrated just as much as she. The fire had destroyed her good laptop, and none of the other women had one with them either. Which meant one computer to go over gigabytes’ worth of data that she’d stolen. Files upon files upon files. If the Institute hadn’t used Maximus’s name, or the Koche bloodname, she was unlikely to be able to find them without a much more thorough and in-depth look.

And the fact that her adrenaline was now starting to fade from the mission and their narrow escape before the human police had showed up wasn’t helping. She wanted nothing more than to eat and take two extra-long naps. Unfortunately, she wasn’t likely to get the latter.

“Gavin, can you get me some food?” she asked absently.

“Sure,” he said, coming over to her, giving her shoulders a rub. “What do you want?”

“What do we have?”

“Not much,” he said bluntly. “Mostly non-perishable stuff.”

“Crackers? Chips? Any sort of meat?”

He perused through their bin of food. “Crackers and beef jerky?” he asked.

“You’re speaking my language,” she said, tapping through another file.

I should really set up a crawler to go through all these files, to search for me. It would be so much faster.

Lena could do it, she knew. But it would take time, and then she knew the others would wonder why she wasn’t hunched over the little screen permanently. The shifters were useless when it came to tech, though Madison and Mila would probably back her up. They were pretty cool; she liked them.

“You’re amazing,” she said as Gavin set already-open bags of food in front of her, so that all she had to do was stick a hand in and start eating.

“You look stressed,” he remarked, standing behind her, his fingers immediately digging into her tense shoulder muscles.
