Chapter Seven

Five kilometers away Tran Quang heard the crash of exploding bombs. They’d prepared this base over a network of tunnels, both old and new. Tunnels stocked with ordnance, weapons and ammunition, food, and rudimentary medical supplies for the lucky few. The underground facilities sheltered them from bombs and artillery. They also gave them a hidden base from which to launch operations against American and ARVN troops.

He was a veteran of frequent bombing by accursed American aircraft. His first inclination was to order his people to take cover in the tunnels. His second was to wait. After the bombing of his home in Hanoi, when he’d been trapped for so long in the basement with the body of his dead wife, he hated the prospect of spending any time underground. He suffered from acute claustrophobia and had frequent nightmares of being trapped underground in the darkness. A fact he kept hidden from his men. As the Senior Political Commissar inside the Iron Triangle, appointed by Hanoi, he was careful not to show fear.

His men were like wolves. If they thought he was afraid, they’d denounce him, and he’d find himself suddenly recalled to Hanoi. Accused of cowardice, and handed another assignment. Probably digging the hated tunnels, as a punishment for failing to display the necessary qualities of courage and determination to his men.

His second inclination proved to be correct, for the bombs were falling several kilometers away, somewhere in the area of the base they’d just dismantled. He glanced at Xuan Dieu, the man he’d put in command of the new base.

“The fools, they’re bombing empty jungle. Make sure they do not discover this location. Hanoi would not be pleased.”

Dieu nodded. “I will keep men on patrol day and night, and make sure the enemy to not get near.”

“Good. There’s something else, Dieu. Those men who attacked our base and killed Kiet weren’t Americans or ARVN. I believe they were CIA mercenaries. You’ve heard of the Phoenix Program?”

“I’ve heard of it, but how could you know they carried out the attack?”

“I have my sources, who tell me the target was Vo Kiet.”

“You’re sure?”

“Yes. Comrade Dieu, I discovered they have a target list, and your name is on it. You cannot go back to running your irrigation project for the Saigon government. They know you are one of us, and the moment you show your face they’ll place you under arrest and likely sentence you to death.”

He paled. Xuan Dieu had enjoyed the considerable prestige his work gave him. Skilled work, designing and implementing irrigation schemes. Work that allowed him to travel around, and he’d pass on information about what he’d seen to the Vietcong. He wasn’t as committed to Communism as some. He’d studied at the university in Hue, and he enjoyed his work. The prestigious appointment had also given him high status in a country where most people were illiterate peasants.

It had never occurred to him he’d have to give up his job, or his fine salary, which allowed him to keep up a high standard.
