CHAPTER 17

There was no time for fireworks. I exploded; pushing my body out to giant form immediately, a twelve-foot monster with Candy Kahn muscles. I reached out, grabbed Faust by the throat, roared, and squeezed. His head popped off like the cap on a tube of toothpaste.

The scrubs and lab coats scattered, screaming, running towards the other side of the room. The faceless corporal who had been questioning me fell back, yelling at the top of his lungs. “Code black! Eighty-Five is unrestrained!”

A red haze filled my brain. Crush them. Kill everyone.

But first, priorities. I had to get Cindy free.

I lumbered off the operating table and bent down on one knee in front of her. “Get me out of here,” she hissed.

I reached out to pull the pins from her wings, and paused. My fingers were as thick as sausages. I concentrated for a moment, and shrank back to normal size.

Gunfire roared. Bullets peppered my back, thudding into my flesh. I winced, and concentrated again. Just a skeleton with a projection. No flesh.

The bullets went through me and thudded into the wall behind us.

Wait. No. Cindy could get shot. Goddamnit, why was everyone but me so soft and squishy? I had to protect her. I gritted my teeth and tried again. Armadillo.

It was a form I’d been experimenting with in the last few weeks, with a little success, so I knew it worked. Immediately, I manifested a shell covering my back, hard as rock. I covered Cindy while I gently pulled the pins out of her wings. Two tiny metal rods propped her body up from under her armpits; I removed them, and she slid off the screen onto the podium with a grunt. I shielded her, waiting for the next blow to fall.

The gunfire had stopped, though; screams of pain rang through the air instead. Something else had happened while I freed my friend. The atmosphere in Dominion’s base had changed.

I risked a glance behind me, and watched a giant wolf launch himself through the air, ripping out the faceless corporal’s throat. The corporal; my interrogator. He had an expression on his face now, as the wolf bit through his carotid and ripped out his flesh. Pure terror.

My heart squeezed. He was here. Max.
