Chapter 11

Murder on the Dance Floor

After the Thanksgiving holiday, it was all about Christmas which was fast approaching. The festive time was to be a happy time for everyone. For me, I was excited to go back to my family and friends in Ireland but I was actually feeling so sad to be leaving this family that I had made in California. What was I going to do without my friend? Alex and I had become like Siamese twins. We had been in each other’s pockets for the past four months and she had come to mean more to me in those months than I could put into words.

The week before I left for Ireland was pretty crazy as the Moonlight Winter dance was coming up and Alex and I were frantically looking forward to it. It was our last hurrah before the Christmas break. Alex was just beside herself with excitement to be able to go with the love of her life, Rick, as he too was leaving to go back to his parents.

So, first things first, we had to buy our prom dresses which meant a trip to the mall. Apart from the local bar, this was our favourite place to be. I could tell Alex was fit to burst with excitement to be able to share this special night with Rick. “So bird, what type of dress are you looking for? Hoochie mama short or traditional long gown?” I joked. “Cat, now that I lost about 300lbs since my last prom, I want to make sure I get a dress that shows that I actually have a figure.”

“Oh please girl, you would look amazing in any dress. Let’s get this fashion show on the road!”

After spending the best part of an afternoon trying on hundreds of dresses, we finally picked our favourites and we looked just beautiful.

As we drove back to College, Alex was being unusually quiet. I knew she was thinking about something. “What’s up bird, you’re too quiet for my liking? You didn’t even curse at that prick in the car in front when he cut in on you a second ago!” I asked concerned.

“I don’t know Cat. I guess I’m just scared. I’m actually so unbelievably happy for the first time in my life. I’m really head over heels for Rick and I’m just thinking why me? Things like this just don’t happen to me. You know what Cat, I’m also trying very hard not to think about you heading back home to Ireland. What am I going to do without you?” Suddenly Alex started to cry. She stopped the car at the side of the road and we threw our arms around each other so tightly as if we didn’t want to let each other go. I was leaving for a month but, to us, it felt as if part of each other was going to be missing and that was something that we both had to realise.

I tried not to let the thought of me leaving dampen her spirits, even though it was crushing me inside.
