DARLENE FINISHES SETTING up her cot against the back wall of the cave and eyes the spiderweb overhead. Gooseflesh prickles across her skin and her belly flips. So much for no fear... She clears her throat. Cody, Spencer, Brent, and Jameson stand near the mouth of the cavern while Jasmine and Ashley sit on their cots near her. “So, how do we get out of here?”

“We don’t even know where here is.” Ashley tucks her knees beneath her chin.

Jameson folds his arms. “They came to give us the cots sometime mid-morning yesterday. Maybe they come by the same time each day. I say we wait until they come back and take whatever vehicles they have.”

“Have you forgotten that we don’t even know how many of them there are going to be?” Spencer says.

Darlene dries sweating palms on the edge of her cot. “Do you really think we can overpower them?” She licks her cracking lips.

“Whatever they gave us has clearly worn off.” Jameson rubs the back of his neck. “I’m feeling normal, as scary as that is. Who’s to say we couldn’t overpower them?”

“Because we have no idea how many of them there will be! Are you not listening, or do you have brain damage?” Cody punches the cave wall, sending a layer of dirt drifting to the ground.

Jameson raises his palms. “Do you have a better idea?”

Brent gives a low whistle. “Now, wait a minute everybody, let’s not jump the gun here. Didn’t we just talk about not going off on fear?”

“Don’t you realize inaction can get us killed?” Ashley gets to her feet, hugging her waist.

Brent rolls his eyes. “And so can moving too quickly when we have zero ideas about what’s going on.”

“I’m with Jameson,” Cody says. “Does anyone know why we were taken?”

“And what does that do?” Ashley huffs.

“If we can find out why we were taken then we can find out who took us.” Cody paces from one end of the cave to the other. “If we find out the who, then maybe we can figure out where we are. Don’t you think the police are going to want to know more information?”

“Police?” Jasmine’s eyes widen. “Do you think we’re going to the police after all this?”

Spencer cocks his head. “Where else would we go?”

“Like the police ever help anything,” Jasmine mutters. Holding her arms, she gives a slow wag of her head. “That’s just going to get us in the middle of a mess of red tape. “I just want to get back to my life.”

Darlene’s jaw goes slack. “Do you want to risk them doing this to somebody else?”

“We don’t even know what this is!” Jasmine forces herself off her cot, stomping toward the mouth of the cave.

“I agree that we need to know where we are.” Darlene swallows past the lump in her throat. “Whatever else we do, we can’t get out of here without that information. Running around a place this deserted without knowledge is a death sentence. There’s no way whoever put this together isn’t going to have a map of this area.
