With Daniel’s support, and the encouragement of her fans back home, Kalyn returned the next night to sing, regardless of the heyday her jealous co-singer had caused the night before. She held her head high, walking hand in hand with him up the steps to the lounge doors as the reporters once again hounded her with rude questions. She paused at the door and turned.

“Listen up please because I am only going to say this once,” She shouted as Daniel looked towards her terrified of her response, “The rumors you have heard are just that, hearsay, and were started by another in the industry who clearly does not understand showmanship. Yes, I am from Bree, and if you do your history you will find that my town began the blues revolution in the first place. It has been forgotten but the people of my area have not forgotten it. Now if you will excuse me, I have a performance to continue.”

The reporters froze in shock at her honest and lady-like response to the vicious attack. She smiled as they entered the hall and she walked proudly past Margret with her head held high in the air. The cheering crowd welcomed her performance happily and in that moment she knew that her dreams were quickly coming true. She continued to return, night after night, the hall becoming filled with fans that crowded the tables and the area surrounding the open tables. They cheered and clapped wildly, and Daniel came each night to support her in her career.

After three weeks straight of preforming, Kalyn began to feel a slight drag. Her voice was still in great shape, but her body felt worn and exhausted after each night. She headed for her doctor’s office on a bright Monday morning just to make sure it wasn’t more serious than a case of new performer burn out her mother had warned her of. As she sat, anxiously awaiting the doctor’s return, her mind wandered back to when she had first met Daniel. He had been a dream come true in her life, one she had almost missed due her paranoia. She smiled, grateful he was as stubborn as he was. The door opened and her doctor appeared once again. He sat down in the chair and gave her a warm smile.

“Well I found the source of your fatigue,” he sighed. “You’re pregnant my dear.”

Kalyn gasped, the tears filling her eyes at the results. “How far?”

“Oh only a few weeks I would say,” he laughed. “But I would try to take it a little easy for a while, slow down on the performances and catch yourself up.”

She returned to the lounge, her mind dizzy with fears and doubts for the future. The pregnancy would definitely slow her career, though she would not quit like her mother had. What is Daniel going to say? She nearly cried as she walked in a trance towards the empty bar. She watched as Derek approached happily.

“Hi kid,” he smiled. “Everything go ok?”

“Yes,” she lied and forced a smile, “Just fine.
