Weeks after our babymoon, we went for my check-up and found out I was having a girl. We celebrated by going shopping right away, for all the most adorable little girly outfits we could find. When we went home, my mother-in-law, Alice, gave one look at our shopping bags and immediately knew what we were having.

“Oh, how wonderful!” She clapped her hands. “You’re having a girl.”

“Yes, we are.” Calvin gave his mother a hug. “A girl as pretty as her mother and her grandmother, of course.”

“Oh, stop it,” Alice said. “I want to put off being called grandmother as long as I can.”

I chuckled. “She doesn’t have to call you Grandma. We can think of something else.”

Alice gave me a hug. “Thank you, darling. I admit when I first found out my son was marrying you, I was disappointed. I wanted him to be happy, you see, to marry for love. But now I can see how much he loves you and how happy you’ve made him.”

“You don’t need to thank me,” I told her. “Your son is a good man.”

“I can hardly wait to see him as a father,” Alice said. “And to a little girl no less. Forgive me for saying so but little girls are always more special to their fathers and vice versa.”

I wouldn’t know since I never knew my real father. As for Dad, he loved me, true, but I had always felt Mom loved me more.

“Really, you’ve made Calvin’s dream of having a family come true,” Alice added. “He’s lucky to have found you.”

That made me pause, my chest tightening a little. The whole time, Calvin and I had been so happy celebrating my pregnancy that I had almost forgotten he wasn’t the father of the child in my womb.

Almost.

Now that I remembered it, guilt started creeping into me. Was it really alright for me to keep making him believe that this child was his?

“Is something wrong, Veronique?” Calvin asked.

I looked at him, holding my breath. No. I couldn’t possibly tell him the truth. At least, not now.

“I’m alright,” I told him.

“Why don’t you go rest?” Alice suggested. “This shopping spree must have tired you. Really, Calvin, you should just go shopping online so Veronique doesn’t get tired.”

“It’s alright, Alice,” I said. “We had fun.”

Calvin smiled. “Nonetheless, let’s get you to the bedroom.”

I nodded, letting him lead me up the stairs. How could I bear to tell him the truth now that I knew how much he loved me?
