Lauren was at work when she got his text. She stared numbly at the phone, reading and re-reading his message, wishing with all her might that there was some kind of mistake. But there it was, right here in front of her.

I think her genes would make a strikingly beautiful child…

Hurt and anger ran rampant through her as the realization of what he said settled in. After all this time, after all those months together, they were back to square one. Mike was exactly where he was when they’d first met, stuck in the ideology that beauty and perfection was everything. True, she now understood why he was so obsessed with perfection.

But that didn’t alter the fact that Mike still didn’t think she was good enough to be the mother of his child. She looked down at the phone again, unable to believe that he would choose Christina of people.

Her fingers moved on auto-pilot as she typed back a reply. How dare you ask that of me, Mike. Did the past few months mean nothing to you? Or maybe I’m not pretty enough for you? Do you…

Gritting her teeth in frustration, Lauren erased her message before she could send it. It was futile. She needed to meet him in person. Her supervisor looked up in surprise as she grabbed her purse and stood up.

“Are you going somewhere, Lauren?”

“I’m sorry, I need to leave,” Lauren snapped. “I’m not feeling well.”

“Lauren, may I remind you that you’re an intern?” Her supervisor’s eyes flashed in annoyance. “I know you have a special relationship with Mr. Parker but you can’t come and go as you want. We have made enough concessions for you and…”

“Fine!” Several heads turned towards them as Lauren’s voice rose by several octaves. “Fine, then. I quit!”

Her entire body was shaking with rage as she stormed out of the office. Her mind was blank as she took a cab to Mike’s apartment. She had no idea what she would say to him. She didn’t even know why she was going over there.

But there was one thing Lauren was sure of. Whatever existed between them was over. She’d waited long enough. She’d made more than enough concessions for him.

She couldn’t do it anymore.

Lauren smoothed down her hair as she walked across the marble lobby of his penthouse, trying to maintain the last shreds of dignity she had left.

“Is Mike in?” she asked the receptionist. “I need to see him. It’s urgent.”

The front door suddenly opened and Mike stepped out, a sober expression on his face. Next to him stood his father. Bill’s eyes flashed with malice as he looked at her.

“Miss Douglas,” he said. “We meet again.”

Lauren felt Mike’s eyes burn into hers but she didn’t flinch. “Mike, I’ll wait for you inside.”

“You do that.” His cold voice mirrored hers.

Lauren heard the two men conversing in hushed tones as Mike accompanied him to the elevator. She couldn’t help but wonder whether Mike would take his father up on his business proposition.
