Chapter Ten

When they got up to leave, Cole felt much better. Mira was a very refreshing and entertaining lady, and he had thoroughly enjoyed himself. He and Tulip were both being hugged like there was no tomorrow from Mira when he realized there was some sort of commotion going on outside the door.

Mira did, too, and she hustled over to the window and peeked through the screen. “Oh my stars.” She hurried to the front door, yanked it open and stepped out onto the porch before Cole could stop her.

He stepped out behind her, and Tulip followed. All the reporters had gone to the end of the driveway where there was a short, squat, little lady with curly gray hair that was tinged slightly blue; she had her hands on her hips and was just talking away to the reporters.

Mira stepped to the edge of the porch. “Beulah Anne, get yourself in here and stop talking to those reporters.”

The lady looked toward Mira, waved, and then—giving a big nod of her head and looking quite indignant—she barreled her way through the reporters to the porch.

“Now, Mira, they were just yacking away, and I was just coming to see who in the world or what in the world had happened to your Tulip. I saw the news, and I had to come see for myself and…and, that, that is Cole Tanner standing right there in the flesh. Oh no, it’s true. Tulip Michelle Jones, did you break him and Shelly Duncan up? Are the rumors true?”

Mira grabbed Beulah Anne’s arm and tugged her into the house, and Tulip gave Cole a roll of the eyes. They followed both of them inside as the reporters continued to call out questions. Cole glared at them then slammed the door, drowning them out.

Inside, Beulah Anne had put her hand on her very endowed bosom and was breathing hard as she stared at Cole and then looked at Tulip. “I was standing right out there with those reporters telling them that not a word that they were saying was true. But I just thought that they were mistaken. Surely, Tulip, you’re not a homewrecker?”

Mira looked very insulted. “Now, Beulah Anne, if you’re going to keep insulting my daughter like that, I’m going to have to ask you to leave. You know, Tulip Michelle—she would not do such a thing.”

“Well, two days ago I would have believed you, but then she ran out on that young man of hers and just broke his heart right there in front of all of us, so I frankly don’t know what to think about your Tulip now.”

Tulip laid a hand on Beulah Anne’s arm and very gently spoke. “Now, Beulah Anne, you know that I wouldn’t do that and, yes, I can totally understand how it can be very confusing. But the reporters can take the news and twist it and turn it however they want to. And over the coming days, you’re going to hear all kinds of things about me and Cole.
