Chapter Six

Barrett

It’s the day before the wedding, and Jenna is freaking out.

“Everything is going wrong,” she says. “The caterer forgot the vegetarian option, the flowers are wilted…”

I tuck the phone against my shoulder and lean back in my desk chair, watching through the glass window in my office door as Clem walks across the lobby, clipboard in hand, to greet someone. She’s so sexy, and I’ve been dying to get her alone since our bathroom adventure. But I’ve been wrapped up in wedding stuff for my sister, and Clem has been busy with her friend who is having relationship drama, so we haven’t seen much of each other.

That isn’t to say we don’t text every night, and I’m loving getting to know her better. She isn’t just sexy, she’s smart, funny, and we share a lot of the same interests. But I want to show her how I feel. I want to worship that curvy body and lose myself inside of her.

“And Thorne says that—” Jenna is still talking as Clem comes in, putting an invoice on my desk.

I wink at her and scribble my signature. When she leaves, my eyes follow the swing of her round ass out the door. She leaves it open, and I can hear her talking to someone as Jenna whines in my other ear.

“Why won’t Clementine come to the wedding?” Jenna asks, bringing my attention back to her with the sound of Clem’s name.

“First of all, it’s Clem, and what do you mean?”

“She texted me to tell me she isn’t coming. Did you do something to mess it up?”

My chair rocks forward as I lean my elbows on my desk. “No, I didn’t—what are you talking about?”

“Girls get serious about you, and you push them away. It’s kind of your M.O.”

“That’s not true,” I say even as I half-admit to myself that she’s right. I’ve never let myself get serious about anyone before, but that was before Clem.

“Did you even invite her?” Jenna asks snootily.

“Well, no.” The question actually gives me pause. I study the papers on my desk without really seeing them, remembering how uncomfortable she’d been when my sister had been ranting about her wedding on our hike. She herself had said that weddings aren’t really her thing, and I don’t want her to think she has to change for me or my family. She’s perfect just as she is. With that in mind, I add, “I don’t want to invite her.”

A noise makes me look up, and I see Clem standing in the door of my office, looking at me with a confused, pained expression on her face, and I realize that what I said maybe didn’t sound exactly right on her end.

I hang up the phone without saying goodbye to Jenna and stand up. I open my mouth to speak but then see a man behind her, and I remember that I have an interview for a new electrician today.

“Mr. Daniels,” Clem says formally, her face going carefully blank. “This is Jeremy, your three o’clock.
