Chapter Four

Minnie watched the water and soapy bubbles rising in the massive bathtub. Once the water became deep enough it turned off automatically, and the abrupt silence thickened the tension in the room. She couldn’t meet Zak’s eyes, so she kept her gaze low and tried not to cry.

“Take your dress and underthings off, Minnie.”

She glanced up to find gentleness flickering beneath his firm exterior. She latched onto the hope that he would forgive her, and she vowed to behave herself from here on out. No more schemes. No more impulsive behavior. No naughtiness whatsoever. She would spend more time with mild-mannered and soft spoken Princess Genna and learn all that she could about how a proper Aklannian wife conducted herself.

“Minnie,” Zak said, coming to tower over her. “Remove your clothing now. Don’t make me ask again.”

Under his watchful gaze, she slipped her shoes off and worked the buttons of her dress open. He continued staring at her, his demeanor dark and forbidding. She couldn’t ever recall feeling so vulnerable in her life, but what choice did she have? If she tried to run away and hide again, he would catch her before she stepped foot outside their chambers.

Taking a deep breath, she pushed her dress over her shoulders and it fell into a pool of silky fabric at her feet. She wore a sheer, snug chemise that encased her breasts, and she slipped that off next. She hesitated to remove her panties, but Zak made an impatient noise, so she pushed those down too and nudged her clothing to the side. Standing naked before her displeased husband, she bowed her head and prayed he would show her leniency and most of all, forgiveness.

“Get into the bathtub.” His brusque tone sent her scurrying for the water. She sank low in the tub, grateful for the modesty provided by the layer of bubbles.

Zak grabbed a washcloth and reached for her right arm. With gentle movements, he began rubbing the red dots from her skin. Her breath hitched. Though his body was stiff and she felt his irritation, his kindness tugged at her heart and gave her more hope for their future. Once her right arm was clean, he paid the same careful attention to her left arm, and then moved to scrub the remaining marker from her face, neck, and chest.

He paused and regarded her with a pained look and tossed the washcloth into the water. He gripped her upper arms and yanked her toward him, until their noses almost touched. She gasped.

“Do you want to go back to Earth, Minnie? Are you unhappy here?”

“What?” She shook her head so fast her hair flipped about wildly. “No, Zak! I don’t want to go anywhere. I want to stay here with you, but only if you still want me.”

“Of course I still want you, you silly human!” His grip tightened and he gave her a small shake. “Even if you turn me blue, scare my relatives, upset half the palace, and make my mother faint on a daily basis, I’ll never stop wanting you.
