Dexx threw the cover over both the knives and grabbed them. He raced up the stairs past Tarikâs cell.
The djinn was a respectful armâs reach away from the bars. âHurry. The grove is in danger. You have to help.â
He sounded genuine. Too bad he couldnât be let out of the cell. If the grove was in danger, he would have been the biggest gun.
Michelle Gomez was on the floor with both hands pressed to her head in a wordless scream.
Fuck. Rainbow wasnât fucking kidding. âMichelle, whatâs happening?â
She didnât respond as convulsions wracked her body.
Whatever it was, it was bad. âRainbow, how connected is she to her grove?â
âVery. She has a link with it at all times.â
âShit! Get to Jackie. Weâre going for a ride.â He hefted Michelle to his shoulder, which wasnât easy with her squirming like a fish, and followed Rainbow as well as he could. âI need you, Michelle, stay with me. You have to show me where the grove is.â
Michelle whimpered, crying and twitching on Dexxâs shoulder. Her breath came in little puffs.
âHurry, Dexx,â Tarik said as they rushed by, âsave the grove.â
Dexx plopped Michelle in the back seat as soon as they got there.
Rainbow jumped in the passenger seat.
She was still technically under arrest, but damn it if Dexx could leave her behind. He had no idea what they were facing.
Jackie roared to life, and they made for east of Troutdale and the grove. The car raced down the highway slicing through the traffic like a hot knife through oil.
Rainbow held onto seatbelt and the door, her eyes wide but set.
âCome on, Michelle, give me some direction here. You have to show us.â Dexx hadnât been there when the wards went up. He had no idea where it was, just that it was east, toward Mount Hood. âRain, get back there and help.â
Rainbow hesitated only a moment before releasing the seatbelt. She scrambled to the back with Michelle.
Dexx was exceeding the speed limit by about double. Traffic was light, thankfully, but if any state troopers caught him, it would take a lot of time talking his way out of the trouble.
The road followed the Columbia River pretty closely, winding back and forth in a lazy eastward direction. Jackie slid through a couple of the tighter curves.
The trees became thicker and grew closer to the roadâs edge. Their branches reached over the top of the road, making a type of tunnel.
Michelle managed a few gasps that sounded close to actual words.
âTurn right up here,â Rainbow translated. âAnd the road is bumpy, I guess.â
Rainbow was doing much better. Being framed for murder might have been exactly what the rusalka had needed.
Dexx turned right. It was a bumpy road. He was going to have to apologize to Jackie profusely if they made it out in one piece. The trees grew larger and older. The ones close to the highway had been like large saplings compared to the great forest further in. It felt familiar somehow like the trees knew him.
