The Warner Bros. lot was aglow in red; the lighting, the buildings, and the floral arrangements were all crimson. Amsterdam’s Red Light District had been recreated in honor of Chad Blake-Shepard’s new film, Sex for Sale, complete with lingerie-swathed models standing behind glass-lined windows. A DJ spun sex-themed tunes in his own private booth and the aroma of cherries and bourbon filled the air as guests sipped the evening’s signature cocktail, the Sexalicious.

Callie nodded appreciatively at the no-expense-spared soiree; it was the perfect occasion for the drapey Balmain that clung to her figure. Luci had sent her personal assistant to drop the dress off and she had been right; it fit Callie perfectly. She had wrapped by ten o’clock, and within the hour, was on the Warner lot. But where was Luci? Callie texted her again. No sooner had she pressed “Send” than a lofty brunette in a strapless red dress loomed in the distance. With the funky lighting and fog machine, it was difficult to make out the girl’s face. She clung to the arm of a fair-haired man several inches shorter than her. Luci. Without a doubt. Who else stood that tall? The girl dropped her suitor’s arm and pranced over to Callie.

“My, oh, my,” Luci said with a whistle. “I think that dress was tailor made for you.”

“Hi, Luci!” Callie hugged her.

“What do you think of the dress?”

“I’m in awe. This is the most beautiful piece I’ve ever worn,” said Callie.

“It belonged to Wallis Simpson. Or so I was told. God, you look smashing.”

Callie spun. “Thanks for loaning it to me. Speaking of smashing…” Callie scoped Luci out; what was different about her? The hair and clothes were just as gorgeous as ever, as was the makeup. But she had changed, somehow. The Luci standing before her wasn’t the same girl she had said goodbye to weeks before. Her entire face had a luster no blush or highlighter could mimic. “Luci, you’re absolutely glowing.”

“Am I?” Luci held her hands to her cheeks and smiled. “I’m happy, I guess. Really happy, for the first time in a long time.”

“Mr. X?”

Luci vigorously nodded. “I left Paris less than a week ago and I miss him already. Like crazy. But I have to focus on my career and deal with this Chad situation. I’ll tell you, Callie, I’m ready to shave this beard right off. I don’t know what I was thinking. My team told me it was a good idea for all of the publicity but they never warned me I’d lose my mind in the process.”

“Are you two supposed to go on dates certain nights of the week or how exactly does it work?”

“Three nights every week, like clockwork. The Ivy, Madeo, whichever restaurant has the most paparazzi. And then red carpet events, of course. He throws a diva-tude if he can’t find me the moment there’s a camera around—but as long as we get the shot, that’s all that matters. See that guy over there? The one in white?” Luci pointed to a group of people surrounding Chad.
