Itâs just Mom and me at home for dinner. Sophie and Andrew have taken Jake to Todd Veeâs Restaurant for dinner and toddler-oriented virtual reality games. Momâs made a good old-fashioned vegetarian lasagna and a California salad. (Sheâs finally managed to master the newfangled stove Sunny insisted on, which has about a thousand controls.)
I dig in appreciatively. Thereâs definitely something to be said for eschewing the virtual game/takeout thing.
âHoney, are you still trying to find that doctor?â she asks, concerned, when weâre done.
I lean forward. âWeâve found him, Mom.â
Her eyes widen. âReally?â
âWell, weâve located him. Havenât contacted him yet.â Again, I refrain from mentioning that Iâm actually planning on paying him a visit.
She shakes her head. âI still donât know about this, Floe.â
âMom, you want me and you and Dad and all the other thawed people to live long and prosper, right?â I do the old Star Trek Vulcan greeting.
She returns the greeting and smiles wanly. âI told you, Iâm just worried about you, hon.â
âWell, if somebodyânamely meâdoesnât find Simkofsky, youâll really have to worry about me. And hey, youâre the one who signed us up for this cryonics thing.â
She looks pained.
âIâm sorry, Mom, I didnât mean that.â I really didnât. Itâs just my hoverdriving lesson talking. âIâm really glad you did.â I think. As long as the immune system thing is cured and I donât drop dead in six years, like Dolly the sheep.
She studies me. âIâm not sure Iâm glad I did it,â she says very quietly.
âYou donât mean that,â I say quickly. âAnd youâll see, weâll find this guy, persuade him to help out at the Center, and everything will get solved.â
She reaches a hand out to touch my cheek. âMy brave girl. What you must have gone through when you woke up . . .â
âThat was a long time ago, Mom.â Not so long agoâI remember it like it was yesterdayâbut I canât tell Mom that.
Poor Mom. She looks so forlorn. I kiss her on the cheek. âStop worrying. Everythingâs fine. Thanks for dinner.â
She smiles wanly. âYouâre welcome, sweetie.â
