“ALRIGHT, YOU GO OVER there. And you get Billie’s clothes brought out. We need to see how everything fits before the concert.” Bea, as she had introduced herself to us a few moments ago, commanded the room the way a captain commanded his ship. No one questioned her, and everyone hurried to do her bidding. Even Billie seemed hesitant to complain.

Bea turned to Billie and then frowned at us. “Do you have to be here?”

Placing a hand on the edge of my holster, I eyeballed her sternly. “Billie’s safety has been compromised. We can’t chance her coming out in the open like this alone.”

Lifting her hands up with a scowl, Bea shook her head and walked away.

“You know,” Billie twisted in her seat to look at me, “you really don’t have to be here. There’s tons of people around. There’s no way Carl will make a move while I’m here.”

I scanned the room, taking in all the entrances and exits. How nobody was questioning whether anyone else was there. “This is just the place that a stalker could easily slip in and out of. I wouldn’t be doing my job if I left you defenseless.”

Billie snorted, turning back in her seat so the hair and makeup artists could work on her. “Like you haven’t already done that.”

“Yes, well, that won’t happen again,” I reassured her, though the look Billie shot me was anything but reassured.

Trisha tapped me on the shoulder. “Why don’t we let Adara watch over Billie, and we’ll go see if we can hunt down Carl? This might be the perfect moment to snoop around his place.”

“Yes, totally. I’d love to hang out with Billie.” Adara beamed and gave a clap of her hands. I gave her a look that made her quickly return to her bodyguard stance. “Uh,” she cleared her throat and jerked her head once in a nod. “I mean, of course, I will make sure that no harm comes to our client. Leave it to me.”

I pursed my lips and frowned. “I’m not sure that’s such a good idea.”

“Oh, it’ll be fine,” Billie said, waving away my concerns. “Carl has never shown up for a fitting. He does have some manners.”

I arched a brow.

“Ugh, okay, so maybe kidnapping me on the way to my car was not showing manners, but still, I’ve never seen him around here. You should be fine.”

“Should be is what I’m worried about,” I muttered and then faced Adara. “If you see anything, you call me, okay? Don’t leave Billie alone. No matter what.”

Adara snapped to attention and mock saluted me. “Aye, aye, captain.”

Sighing at how I got myself into these kinds of situations, I followed Trisha out of the building and back to our car. Trisha pulled up her phone and typed in the address for Carl’s place.

“Wow, that’s a nice area,” Trisha commented with raised brows.

I pulled onto the street and said, “It goes to show you that even rich people can be crazy, and in my experience, so far they’re the only ones really allowed to be.
