Jaden rubbed his eyes.

He went through the transcript again. They’d assumed the Surashan’s spy at Central Command betrayed Sonil’s flight plan to the Surashan. Yet no suspicious signal left Central Command that day. It might not mean anything. The leak in Central Command could have used private comms or even psycom.

Restless, Jaden wandered through the sparse quarters Oltu had assigned him. A tribute didn’t rate the Imperial stateroom, not without the Empress, but his new room easily beat a prison cell. He’d taken the improved quarters as a good sign.

The Qui lizards trusted him and he had trusted them with his plan.

But who was the mole in the Qui court? He went through them all.

Oltu? No. Jaden could not believe it. Oltu’s loyalty ran deep. Jaden knew that for absolute certainty. Fitor? Jaden didn’t want to believe it. Fitor was the only Qui that had ever defended him, always turning a blind eye to tradition... until Jaden lost Sonil. Then Fitor’s anger had nearly cost Jaden his life. Jaden considered Sonil’s mother. He’d love K’rista to prove a traitor, but he didn’t think so, and Sonil would be devastated.

What about Meseri? Could the commander betray her Empress? Sonil had trusted Meseri with her fears about the Surashan – fears Sonil had not confided to anyone else, not even the man she professed to love. Anger charged Jaden’s veins, heated his blood. He wanted to find her, to demand why... to know what this SuraQui meant to her.

I come for you...

Sonil’s abduction had been quick and brutal, the details branded into his mind with vivid clarity. The Surashan abductors were not friendly to the Empress, not by any stretch of imagination. This SuraQui had to be responsible, but why the elaborate ruse to reach Earth?

Jaden punched the table, frustration and heart-wrenching sorrow bursting for release. He hated Sonil for the deception, but it didn’t change the horrible ache of losing her.

A low chime warned him of company. The door opened and Oltu’s winged Qui suddenly dominated the room. Dol’ce stood in human form behind him. Jaden rose to his feet, heart thumping. Oltu held Jaden’s armor in his hand.

“Dol’ce will stay on Earth,” Oltu announced in his lizard rumbling voice.

Jaden blinked. “Colonel Marcel pulled out of the mission?”

Dol’ce pressed past Oltu forcing the lizard male aside. “No. Marcel is committed to your plan, but know this, I will kill you myself if anything happens to him.”

Her ferocity took Jaden by surprise and he stepped back.

Never pet a lizard in human clothing.

Dol’ce’s features regained her usual charm. “K’rista has decided she will remain on Earth on the Thrak ‘Qui until your return with Sonil. She wishes to help with Crendea and continue negotiations with President Rooster. My duty to the Honored Qui demands that I stay. Sonil would not want her honored mother alone in charge of human-Qui relations. Earth deserves more than the brief limits of K’rista’s mercy.”

Oltu nodded. “I leave clear orders with Captain Dro’ko that Dol’ce and K’rista must be in agreement before any aggressive action is undertaken.
