Mark had been watching his wife flirt with the lifeguard all summer long, although he wasn't sure how many others would consider it flirting. The thing about this current situation that got him the most excited was the potential that maybe, with Sebastian, she didn't want the control. Or short of that, maybe she'd be fine giving it up for a time, for a guy like Sebastian.

He wouldn’t have been the first lover his wife had taken, although even after over a year and a half since they’d crossed that line, Mark still couldn’t believe that they had. Linnea didn’t see the man often, and as far as he knew, she hadn’t seen him in at all lately. He didn’t know for sure because she liked it that way—they both did. Part of the excitement was the mystery. It supercharged every moment that they were not together.

Linnea traveled a lot for work. Sometimes, she came home with a story. Sometimes, she didn’t share a thing, but he was pretty sure that something had happened. He knew that that probably made him wimpy in most men’s eyes—possibly even his wife’s—but he didn’t care. He wasn’t afraid that she was going to leave him, and because of that, he found security in their relationship, no matter how unconventional it was.

At the start of the summer, when he’d first noticed Linn and Sebastian doing their little dance, Mark had thought that he’d be perfect for her. He was young, would be moving on after the summer, passing from college to the real world and out of their lives, and he had a good guy quality.
