We sat in silence as we headed to a private airstrip that Luca’s family had owned before it had been handed to him. It was on the outskirts of Sicily with only three airplane hangars on the large plot of land. It was forgotten and unimpressive to the naked eye.

That was until my eyes landed on the private plane that was waiting for us. The captain stood firm at the top of the stairs while the air hostesses waited at the bottom of the small plane traditionally used for short-haul flights. On the fuselage, there was a black emblem near the tail end, a large LC with a thick circle around it.

Everything Luca owned was extravagant, but as I peeked at him from the corner of my eye, he seemed unfazed by the lifestyle he lived. As we drew closer, I began to wonder if this was the lifestyle his father had accustomed him to, desensitizing him to the wealth and power he possessed.

Then my thoughts slipped into a dark pool, wondering if this was the same plane that brought me here from New York.

I forced the dark thoughts away, deciding to focus on the positive. In three hours I would be closer to my loved ones, closer to those that would give me a sense of identity.

“Olivia,” I heard Luca say; he held out his hand for me. We had come to a stop just at the bottom of the stairs, leading up to the plane.

Blindly taking his hand, we slipped out of the car together and were greeted by two overly excited women wearing bright red lipstick and their blonde hair pulled tightly away from their faces. Their voices were a rush of high-pitched noise as they welcomed us onto the flight, shaking both of our hands before gesturing for us to go up and enjoy our flight.

Bitterness bit at me.

“Are you okay?” Luca demanded halfway up, the wind blowing his short hair away from his face.

“I’m fine,” I breathed, wanting nothing more than to drop his hand, but I would play nice and force away the dread that was coating my skin.

Chen and my guards took their seats as Luca shook the pilot’s hand, who by the sounds of things had been flying Luca around the world for years. Luca was kind as he asked about his children and wife before freeing my hand so I could take a seat.

The only seats open were in the middle of the plane, facing the back with more privacy than the rest. In between them sat a table where I suspected Luca would work while flying. Before I could let my eyes wander the luxurious new setting, Luca slid into the seat across from me.

“We’ll arrive at the airport at five-thirty. After that, we’re staying in The Blooms Hotel where a seamstress will fit you for tomorrow.”

“I’ll need to pick up my dress,” I told him tightly, aware that I would be trapped in a small space with him for the next three hours.
