Chapter Three

“I’m sorry, Mr. Larkin,” said Belinda, feeling pretty bleak.

“Oh, don’t worry about it, Belinda. And make that Larry, please. We don’t need to stand on ceremony here. I know what it does to a woman when her man is at work at all hours of the day and night. You must’ve been pretty lonely, why wouldn’t you tell me that?”

Belinda frowned a little.

“You’re Jack’s boss. It’s inappropriate.”

“I think being appropriate is very boring, don’t you, Belinda? Why, when I think of a woman as lovely as you are waiting for her husband to come home to her, I feel quite guilty about keeping their men at work. It’s very unfair, indeed. What do you propose I should do about it?”

Belinda frowned a little more.

“I don’t… I don’t know what you mean.”

“Well, the thing is, Jack is one of the best men we have. He is very good at his job. When something’s very important, I prefer to get Jack to do it. I know it’ll be done right. But that does mean that his very beautiful wife is left all alone at home, without her husband to… satisfy her.”

Belinda’s eyes widened.

This couldn’t be appropriate, it really couldn’t.

Could it?

“Oh… I guess if you really need Jack, I can’t complain.”

“But you need Jack, too, don’t you, Belinda? Sometimes, when I see you, I can’t help but think of what a lucky man Jack is to have a woman like you.”

Belinda was feeling a little uncomfortable, but the wine was also making her feel a little giddy and more than a little exhilarated. This was completely unlike any conversation she would’ve had with Jack’s boss before.

She was shocked to discover that she was checking Larry out. His clothes were perfectly tailored and he filled them out magnificently. He looked so strong and handsome. He had never been her type, but she couldn’t help feeling a bit attracted to Larry.

When Larry moved a little closer to her, Belinda’s heart raced.

All right, she thought, she was more than a little attracted to him.

It didn’t matter, of course. It was just a little feeling. Feelings like that happened to people all the time, and they always passed.

There was nothing to feel guilty about.

“Umm… I understand the pressure Jack is under.”

“But does he understand the pressure you’re under? It’s not easy to wait for somebody to do what they want to do, and be constantly available for them when they need you. I think you’re always there for Jack, whenever he needs you, aren’t you? If you were mine, I’d need you all the time.”

Belinda’s eyes widened.

She couldn’t possibly have heard that right. Maybe it was just a poorly phrased compliment, she tried to tell herself, but she didn’t believe it.

“Congratulations on your marriage,” blurted out Belinda.

It was the first thing that popped into her head. Had she hoped that mentioning his wife would make him back off a bit? Well, she couldn’t have been more wrong.
