ELI WAS lying on his bedroll up in the hayloft later that evening when he heard the tinkling tones of female laughter carried by the wind. He crawled over to the open hayloft door and gazed out. His stomach tightened. Samuel was walking around the corral with Eleanor on his arm. Jealous, Watkins? He slapped the thought away, unable to deny that the sight of her delicate gloved hand through Samuel’s elbow didn’t exactly sit well with him. Eleanor laughed again at something Samuel said, and Eli sank back into the shadows to watch them, unseen.

He hadn’t seen Samuel since he’d left the shack this afternoon and his heart ached at the sight of him. Samuel’s wheat-colored hair shone in the moonlight and had been pulled back into a tie at the nape of his neck, fastened with a black ribbon. He looked suave and sophisticated, and a million miles away from the kind of man who would be interested in a penniless cowpoke like Eli.

Eleanor’s face was alight with happiness, and once again Eli felt guilty for the pain she would ultimately suffer. Pain he would, in part, be responsible for, not that either he or Samuel would have ever caused her heartache willingly. From what he could tell, she was a good, kind, sweet-natured girl who didn’t deserve to have her life manipulated by a heartless, money-hungry bastard like Richard Somerfield.

Eli sighed heavily. What the hell had he gotten himself into? Wouldn’t a sane man cut his losses and get out while he could? He chuckled softly to himself. Sanity was not something he’d ever been accused of, and he could no more leave Samuel than cut out his own heart—both of which would amount to the same thing. Without either, he would die.

Eli’s breath caught in his throat as Samuel and Eleanor stopped strolling and she leaned up to kiss him. He would not deny that his heart skipped a beat as Samuel’s lips clung to hers for just a moment, and did not continue its rhythmic beat until Samuel gently pushed her away. Eleanor was obviously embarrassed by her daring, because Eli watched as Samuel soothed her, a reassuring smile on his face. Samuel turned Eleanor around, and as they passed the barn, Eli’s heart swelled when Samuel looked up at the hayloft and smiled, just for him. Eli hugged that smile to him. A smile that warmed his heart and would have to be enough to soothe his soul until he was in Samuel’s arms again.

He watched Eleanor and Samuel until they climbed the porch steps and disappeared into the house. When the door had closed behind them, he crawled back to his bedroll and settled down, his head turned so that he could gaze out on the night sky through the open hayloft. As he lay there, he replayed the conversation he and Samuel had had this afternoon. Being apart was torture, he’d be a fool to deny it, and as long as they were here, on Somerfield land, they could never be together the way they longed to be.
