Chapter Twenty
We walked out to his car, and Andrew opened the door for me.
âWhat a gentleman,â I teased.
He gave a little bow. âThatâs what a lady deserves, right?â
I rolled my eyes. âUh huh.â
âYou in?â he asked.
I nodded, and he walked around to his side of the car.
âReally,â I said. âMy parents love you.â
He backed out of the drive and tried acting nonchalant with a shrug, but his smile gave him away. âYou think?â
âOh please,â I said. âMy parents ate up all that âyes maâam,â âMr. Hoffnerâ stuff.â
We started down the road, and he turned toward Main Street where the one movie theatre in town was.
He glanced over at me. âAnd what about you?â
âWhat about me?â
One corner of his mouth tipped up. âDid you eat it up?â
The thought of flowers and his bright eyes under short, wavy hair made my stomach twist. In a good way. âMaybe.â
At the one streetlight in town, he slowed to a stop.
âThat, and chili,â I teased.
His smile spread. âYeah, well, we are pretty good at making chili.â
I watched him, his slightly pink cheeks, his lean hands holding the steering wheel, and smiled. I couldnât help myself.
He glanced over and caught me looking at him. âWhat?â
I smiled a little more but gazed at my lap. âNothing. I just kinda like you.â
âYouâre not too bad either.â
We pulled up to the movie theatre, and I got out before he could grab my door. As we walked across the street, he hit the lock button on his key fob, and his car honked twice. That was nice. I always had to use my keys to unlock the door to my pickup.
There was a huge line insideâmostly parents with gaggles of little kids. The only movie playing that weekend was animated and rated G, but Iâd take what I could get. Plus, it meant most people my age wouldnât be there, which didnât upset me one bit.
Andrew bought tickets, popcorn, and drinks for us, and we found seats near the back. The lights dimmed to black, and the screen lit up with a big green message.
âHey,â he said. âDid you know theyâre going to show us previews?â
I glanced from the screen to his face, feigning shock. âYouâre kidding.â
He nodded seriously and pointed at the screen. âSee? Itâs been approved.â He lowered his voice. âFor a general audience.â
I covered my mouth. âOh, how horrible.â
He grinned. âI think weâre good.â
âPhew.â I flicked imaginary sweat off my face. âThank goodness.â
A grin settled on his lips, and he looked at me, his expression unreadable.
âWhat?â I asked.
He shook his head slightly. âYouâre cute.â
A small laugh started in my stomach and blew out my nose. âHa.â
âNo, really.â He brushed his thumb under my chin.
It left a trail of heat, and I tucked my cheek onto my shoulder. âYou think?â
He nodded and dropped a kiss on my forehead. âReally.â
Sitting with him, feeling his lips on my skin, seemed so comfortable, right. Like weâd been friends for years instead of months.
Another message crossed the screen about leaving phones on silent.
