Something pounded in Autumn’s brain, rattling against the inside of her skull and pushing at the back of her eyes. She moaned, wanting to go back to sleep instead of facing the pain, but her body wouldn’t let her. Consciousness invaded her mind, making her aware not only of the agony in her head, but the ropes that bound her hands. She was upright instead of lying in bed, a hard chair beneath her. Autumn snapped her eyes open at the realization that something was very wrong, but she instantly shut them again to stop her stomach from lurching up her throat.

“She’s awake!”

The voice was a familiar one, and Autumn forced her eyes to open more slowly this time. Her stomach still churned, but it was obvious that whatever was going on was something she would have to face. Her heart pounded as she took in the room lined in concrete blocks, which only made the hammering in her head worse.

“It’s about time.” This was a different voice, and as a figure pushed his way into the room, Autumn instantly knew who he was. It was George Stone, the older man who had led the protest in front of The Enchanted Elm just over a week ago. “Why do you have her face uncovered?” he demanded. “Who knows what she might do to us.”

“She’s not Medusa,” replied the first voice. Autumn picked up her head to look at its owner, who sat slumped over in a wooden chair of his own. He, however, was not tied to it. “Besides, she looked like she wasn’t able to breathe.”

“Isn’t that the point, Bill?” Mr. Stone countered. “We’re wanting to rid our town of this vermin, after all.”

Autumn realized he had spoken to Bill Harrington, the man who owned the grocery store. It was the same person Lisa Rochester had said put up one of George’s witch-hating flyers in his window. He had a curly man perm that made him look like he had popped out of the seventies or eighties and squinty eyes that were bored and tired. “Okay, yeah, we don’t want witches around here, but you never said anything about killing them. I thought we were just going to run them out of town.”

Stone put his fist on his hip and gave Bill a glare. “And then what happens? She just flies back here on her broomstick and puts a curse on all of us. I thought you understood what you were in for. We’re the descendants of witch hunters, after all, so start acting like it!”

Witch hunters? Seriously? Autumn wanted to ask Stone if his cheese had fallen completely off his cracker, but she was in no mood for quips. “Just let me go. I haven’t done anything to anyone.”

“The hell you haven’t!” George was in her face now. “You and your kind have been a negative influence on generations of kids! There’s no telling how many of them have fallen under your spell, and we’re not going to rest until we know our town is clean! That’s what the Purity and Pride Assembly is all about.
