Trying to dismiss the hurt, he thought at least now he would have an excuse. “Peyton Wagner,” he mumbled in displeasure, pain constricting his chest.

Her voice amused, she mentioned. “Oh, of course. Peyton always provides what I need.” She revealed no other details, no other explanation forthcoming.

His face heated up with anger, a painful distinction from the tightening of his chest. He wanted Prudence for himself, wanted to be the only one she desired. But he couldn’t fight against someone he didn’t know. Or for someone who didn’t want him. The conflicting thoughts made him dizzy, causing pain to spike through his head. Why did he feel like he’d lost out on someone special?

“Oh?” He closed his eyes in disappointment, needing to get himself back under control. This was stupid. He barely knew Pru and yet he had the irrational urge to rip this Peyton person apart.

“Yeah,” Pru began again. “We’re very close, grew up together actually.
