Chapter 5

Madeline

“Hmm, where did Alec go?” I ask in a sing-song voice. “I swear I just saw him over here. Where could he be?”

Giggles erupt all around me. Six cherubic faces look my way, each the picture of innocence.

It’s Zoe, my youngest niece, who breaks first. “Aunt Maddy, he’s right there. Can’t you see him?” She points one stubby finger at the giant and poorly packed mound of sand five feet away. At one end, I can just barely make out Alec’s face. At least they left him that and didn’t accidentally smother him.

“Rawr!” Alec suddenly lunges up, showering them all in sand, and they take off running and squealing.

I watch them go, shaking my head. I look behind me and see every female in my family watching him play with the kids, wearing identical sappy smiles. Of course, they had all loved him from the moment they first met him. Who wouldn’t? I’d actually been more worried that he’d be overwhelmed by my boisterous family. He’s on the quiet side, and my family… well, we aren’t. We’re a huge clan, made up of five outgoing and extremely outspoken women and my long-suffering dad. Between my sisters and my pack of hyperactive nieces and nephews, our little patch of beach is constantly in full chaos.

But Alec handles it beautifully. He greeted everyone warmly and easily, learning their names and chatting like old friends. He even won the little monsters over by endlessly playing catch, tossing them into the surf over and over, and expertly making intricate sandcastles with them, complete with moats and crab carcass guards. They had succumbed to his charm just as easily as the adults had and were currently busy chasing him around.

I spot my oldest niece, Luna, sitting in a beach chair beneath an umbrella a little ways apart from the rest. She’s just going into middle school and had recently started to become body conscious, keeping her t-shirt and shorts on at the beach and pool, wearing baggy and shapeless clothes. I hate to see that with anyone, but especially my own flesh and blood. It’s everything I work against.

I start across the sand toward her, but before I reach her, Alec drops into the sand beside her. I pause, watching as he talks to her, and soon, Luna’s shy facade begins to crack.

“Look at that,” Rosie—my sister and Luna’s mom—says, crossing her arms and taking in the sight of Luna actually laughing. “He’s a miracle man.”

Luna stands and tugs off her t-shirt, revealing the adorable blue-and-white-striped nautical swimsuit I’d picked out for her at the start of summer but hadn’t seen yet. She looks beautiful, and I sigh in relief as she runs to the water after Alec without a care in the world.

“He is definitely something,” I agree, snapping a picture of the two of them playing in the surf.

As a bonus, Alec adds nicely to my picture-perfect canvas. All afternoon and especially as the sun sets, I snap pictures and take short videos for my account.
