Chapter 6

Thursday morning Billy woke in his luxurious guest room, all alone. He’d gone over everything and that had happened between him and Shannon last night, still amazed that they’d managed to give each other a little something-something in the front seat of his new SUV. It had been mutual masturbation, true. But hotter than any action he’d had in the months since they were together.

He hadn’t been lying when he’d told her she was magic, though. She was everything, and if he’d thought he was over her he sure as hell realized now that he wasn’t.

“Shit.” He grumbled a few more choice words as he climbed out of bed.

He grabbed his swim trunks and went into the huge bathroom to start his day. He had nothing to do until tomorrow’s meeting with Frankie out at her goat farm, and he wasn’t in any mood to get shot down by Shannon. Not after what they’d shared last night. It might have changed the way he saw his life going forward, but for her? It was just fooling around.

“Like hell it was,” he said as he left the room.

It was early, not quite eight o’clock, but he could see that there were already several people on the beach. They could have it today. He wanted to swim and swim hard, and the pool was empty right now. That shouldn’t be a surprise. If he was on vacation he’d spend a lot of his time taking in the view of the bay and sitting on that sugar-soft sand. He wasn’t on vacation, though. He’d never really been, had he?

Back when his parents were alive, the three of them would sometimes head out to the Orlando theme parks for day trips. Or they’d drive east to the coast over in Melbourne. They’d both worked too hard and too long to give up more than an odd day here and there to spend as a family. His mother had been a waitress in a diner and his father had been an assistant manager of the big box store in town. That night their car crashed, during a summer storm when he’d been ten years old, had ended any hope of their lives getting any easier. It sure hadn’t for him. He still missed them every day.

He found the stack of thick, plush towels meant for guests’ use and grabbed one, tossing it onto the nearest lounge chair. After a quick rinse under the outdoor shower, he dove into the pool and started swimming. Back and forth. Back and forth. Again and again, until his blood pounded in his ears and his muscles screamed.

Gripping onto the edge of the pool, he finally stopped and sucked in a great breath. Rolling under again, he began to cool down as he slowed his pace up and down the length of the pool a few more times.

Surfacing, he slicked his hair back off of his face and pulled himself out of the pool. He padded over to where he’d left his towel.
