Chapter Five

Instead of waking in her warm bed in her modest studio apartment, ready to begin another day of classes, Bonnie woke to Four's hard, furry body curled around her, giving her warmth. For a moment, she wanted only to snuggle down and breathe in his scent. It calmed her, gave her peace. A sense of being protected that she'd only felt when she was a small child, cradled in her parents care. The danger, the kidnapping, the uncertainty of her future—she let all that fade into the uneasy background. Inhaling deeply, she let the smell of winter fill her up.

Then, after a few deep breaths, she realized each inhalation caused the hot space between her thighs to swell and ache with arousal. The realization was frightening, though her desire clouded that fright somewhat. What caused her to want this beast?

Stirring, Bonnie opened her eyes to find Four staring down at her, bathed in the light of the setting sun filtering through the small, flat windows at the top of the shed. His eyes were a beautiful rich golden-red color, not the cold yellow she'd imagined them to be, and she found herself staring, mesmerized.

“Wo-man,” he said, bent his head to her throat, and gave her a long, slow, hot lick. Bonnie felt the rough caress all the way down to her toes. Immediately she was breathless and limp in his strange embrace, her body begging to be touched. The sensations were overwhelming to her. This was what she had been missing all these years...

What is wrong with me? she wondered.

Somehow she found the strength to push herself slightly away, and Four backed off. He didn't reproach her or keep pushing like all the boys she'd experimented with. If anything, it made him less of a monster. He regarded her hotly with those beautiful eyes, but he waited with patience.

Bonnie licked her lips. “So... what are you?”

His ear flicked, but he didn't react immediately. A rumble in his chest, like a growl, made her heart pick up the pace, but she forced herself to stay still and hold his gaze, and after a moment she realized he was trying to form words.

“Moon,” he said. “Moon full. Wolf. No moon. Man.” He let out a frustrated huff. “Moon.” And then he lifted a handlike paw and gestured awkwardly at his strange body, his muscular arms and stocky legs, the head and tail of a wolf, but the torso of a man, as if to say there was no word for what he was. Bonnie was surprised to find she was unsurprised. He existed. Why should he not transform?

“You mean you're a man one day a month and a wolf one day a month, and the rest of the time you look like this?”

He dipped his head in acknowledgment.

“Were you always like this?” she asked.

He shook his head. “Think man first. Be-fore. First man. Now this.” He snorted.

Bonnie thought. “The people after you, the ones who drugged me and tied me up. Do you think they did this to you?”

“May-be.
