Chapter Sixteen

I spent the following day driving myself crazy by replaying my date with Mira, but what started off as a pleasant excursion into the recent past gradually turned into me second-guessing myself. For the first time in pretty much ever, I had removed sex from the dating equation, and I had enjoyed one of the best nights of my life. It seemed logical, of course, since I’d enjoyed so much of my time with her before we started making out that I wouldn’t suddenly need to have sex with her to have a good time. Whether it was her or the time spent getting to know one another that improved the outcome of a sexless evening, I didn’t know, but the fact that I’d spent more time reminiscing about one date with her than all of my previous encounters combined told me that something good was happening.

Mira, more understanding than I could have hoped, seemed to support my need to proceed cautiously. At her suggestion, we’d walked back to her house after dinner, though the night was chilly and she wore heels. The partial moon hanging in the cloudless sky softened the city around us, making the perfect romantic backdrop for our stroll. As we walked through the neighborhood streets, she held my hand but otherwise attempted none of her earlier seduction, and when she rested her head on my shoulder as we waited to cross a busy street, the sweetness of the moment affected me almost as powerfully as her super vixen antics before dinner. I couldn’t believe how satisfying it was just to be with her, satisfying in ways I hadn’t considered before.

We stood on her front porch for a charged minute before she hesitantly invited me in, as if she didn’t want to unduly tempt me. How could she not know that just looking at her could send me over the edge? I was nowhere near ready for our time together to end, so temptation be damned, I followed her inside. I rubbed her poor, high heel-battered feet for a time before she found White Christmas on the classic movie channel. Then for the rest of the night, we half-watched old holiday movies and made out like teenagers in her darkened living room. And instead of me sneaking out after she fell asleep, we shared a lingering goodbye around two o’clock. I left then only because I didn’t see any benefit to Cassie returning home from her sleepover to find her mother and me in a compromising position on her living room couch. It had been a sweet, exciting, practically perfect night, one I was uncharacteristically reluctant to end.

But now that I kept reliving it, I began to wonder if I was doing the right thing, if waiting for what we both seemed to want was really the best option for us. Certainly the tantalizing build-up to the bedroom was intoxicating, like foreplay for days, but it couldn’t last indefinitely. Even if I waited a year
