TUESDAY 7TH MARCH
âI donât understand whatâs happening,â Rachel told Tina miserably.
They were sitting together in the big messy living room. Rachelâs mother having taken the children to another room to give them some quiet and privacy. âIs that why youâre here? Have you come to tell me whatâs going on?â
âIâm sorry Rachel, â said Tina. âFor now, all we can tell you is that we are doing absolutely everything we can to make sense of it all.â
âLorcan doesnât think so,â Rachel sounded reproachful. âLorcan says that Jennifer would still be alive if the police had been doing their jobs properly. He doesnât believe that Jennifer died of natural causes. He thinks someone did that to her on purpose. Is that what you believe?â
âRachel, Iâm going to have to ask you to trust me,â said Tina. âCan you do that?â
âI donât know,â Rachel replied simply.
âFair enough,â said Tina. âI can understand why you might feel that way. But Iâm going to ask you to trust me anyway. And part of that means answering some more questions we need to ask you. Even if the questions appear to have nothing at all to do with whatâs been happening. Do you think you could do that?â
âI think so. I want to help.â
âGood. Then the first thing I need to ask is this. When I questioned you about Anna Foxâs twin sister, Claire, you said Claire didnât finish school, even though she was just as bright as Anna. Instead, she went to London and took an office job. Why was that do you know?â
Rachel shook her head, âI donât really know. I donât think even Anna could make any sense of it at the time. I think Claire just sort of went a bit funny.â
âIn what way, funny?â
âJust funny. Weird, Anna called it. Like, Claire went and had all her hair cut off for starters, I mean short-short.â Rachel gave what Tina thought was an unconscious toss of her lovely mass of curls. âAnd then she changed the way she dressed. Claire was always a real girly girl, that was one of the things we used to tease her about, but then she started wearing really shapeless gear, you know, really baggy. And she had a boyfriend, David. They were crazy about each other, but she just suddenly dumped him. Then again, their mother was really sick around that time, I mean she was actually dying. So that may have had something to do with it all.â
âAnd can you remember roughly when all these changes in Claire began?â
âGod, I donât know, it was all so long ago. Though actually, hang on, I do remember it was around the time I had my appendix out, that Claire had her hair cut off. I know that because I met her the first day I was allowed out after the operation. I hardly recognised her to be honest.â
âWhen did you have your appendix out,â asked Tina.
âExactly? Oh Lord, let me think. It would have been a week maybe before I was supposed to go to Wicklow for the transition year weekend field trip.
