Music thumped through the packed club and Kittie sashayed down the stage. Guys and girls lined the front of the lighted platform. Some waved dollars, eager to tuck cash in her g-string. Tonight, the tips alone would pay her rent.

Before her hand closed around the shimmering sliver pole, her feet slipped on the polished, faux wood floor. Four inch, black studded platform sailed into the air, and Kittie felt a pop in her lower back when it slammed into the stage. The spectators gasped, but some assholes had the nerve to boo.

“Jesus, Wesley. I told you, never buff the stage on the weekend!” Kittie’s boss Penny ran toward her. A concerned frown pruned her bright red lips. “You okay, sweetie?”

Near the bar, Wesley shouted something about bullshit and always getting blamed for everything.

Slowly, Kittie sat up. “Yeah, don’t think I broke anything.” She rubbed her lower back. Not too much pain. So far, so good.

“Be careful.” Penny waved sparkly nails at her. “Don’t move too quickly. Go backstage and put your feet up.”

“Nah, I can finish my set.” Kittie got to her feet and tested her spine with a quick hip swivel. “Feels fine.”

Penny didn’t look convinced. “You should get that checked out, kiddo.”

Kittie waved her off. “No worries. I’ll have a bruise, be a bit stiff, but that’s it.”

Penny backed off, but Kittie could see the worry carving lines in her boss’ face. The woman hovered over her, acted like her mom. Not that Kittie minded, since she’d never known her real mom. It was nice having Penny look out for her, but she couldn’t afford to not finish her routine. Those waving dollars meant keeping her douchebag landlord off her ass.

After she completed her set, she hobbled into the tiny dressing room of the Rhinestone Ranch. Now the pain set in, and a dull throb radiated through her lower back. It felt tight and stiff, and her legs trembled. She shed those killer platforms and sighed as she carefully lowered herself into a chair.

The door opened and a flash of gold jacket signaled Penny’s entrance. She shook her head, making her gold hoop earrings jingle. “I told you, little girl. Now you’ve fucked up that back even worse.”

Wincing as she adjusted in her chair, Kittie shooed her friend with one hand. “Give me ten minutes. It’ll ease up.”

“Bullcrap.” Penny pulled out her car keys. “You’re going to the hospital. Suzie can watch the front.”

Kittie sipped her coffee. “Dr. Peller says I’ll be off six weeks. Wants me in physio by next week.”

Penny sat at the kitchen table and ladled sugar into her cup. “You do as he says.”

“I can’t afford that,” Kittie’s voice squeaked with worry.
